Lefty's got a hell of a round going to get into contention. I've been watching him for a lot of years and don't know that I've seen a better ball striking round than he's played today. That and his mental game has also been an A+.
Went down to the Open today, what a great track that is. Was there in 2000 for the Friday round, the weather was a lot better then. It was just a little windy and cool there today, and the gallery was quite large. Followed the threesome of Goosen, Furyk, and Cabrera (all past Open champs) from 3 through 6, then waited on the hill at 6 to see Lefty blast his second shot on the green. Then followed the first trio again from 8-10. Watched amateurs on 14 and 15, then went to watch David Toms from 16-18, then 1-3. Congratulated him on the birdie at 18, he gave me a wave, then I said Geaux Tigers, and he smiled. Paid $95 for a grounds ticket ($15 less than face) on E-Bay, am seeing Sunday Trophy Club tix for about the same. I really dig that course. I might be going back. :thumb:
Had the good fortune to play PB in 1988. The bogey on #14 was the highlight of the round. Over the years I've played a lot of golf all over the world and that just might be the toughest hole I've ever played. Certainly in the top 3.
What did it run back then, like only 2 bills? :hihi: You will appreciate this article: Pebble's tricky 14th hole causing fits at US Open The pin placement on 14 is ridiculous. Toms double bogeyed there yesterday.
I have a hard time remembering what I did yesterday, but to the best of my recollection it was in the $125-$150 range. I was in San Jose for a seminar that got boring so I skipped the last day and drove down Monterrey Penisula. I wasn't expecting to play as I didn't think I would be able to get on as a single. Luck was with me as I was on the first tee about 45 minutes from the time I walked into the Pro Shop. I don't have a problem with #14. If you play to make 5, you can probably do it 3 of the 4 rounds. If you play to make 4 you're asking for trouble and odds are you're going to get it.
What's with the greens? Am I seeing things are do they look patchy as hell? They are the ugliest looking greens I have ever seen other than courses on the British Isle. Wow, what a tough course.
They were saying the greens have brown patches but they are still rolling smooth and true. Something how Tiger announced his return this afternoon.
It's tough to put up back-to-back good rounds at a normal Tour stop. The Open at Pebble makes it even tougher. That and 5 strokes is a hell of a deficit to make up. Of course if anybody can do it, the guy wearing the red Nike polo can certainly do it. Should make for good viewing.
Good thing is Tiger prolly won't have to make up 5 strokes cause DJ will more than likely come back to the pack. DJ on Sunday's this year has been horrible. Plus he's never been in this situation before of leading the US Open after 54 holes. It was amazing last night to see how fast the hypocritical media jumped back on the Tiger bandwagon. I hope he pulls it off and tells the media to kiss his a$$!
