Actually, his supposed ailment, esophageal spasm (or "nutcracker esophagus"), generally responds rapidly to to medication. While I don't care for the man and his behavior, there's no reason not to believe his medical story.
I never said he didn't have a medical condition, i'm saying he used that as an excuse, when it probably had absolutely nothing to do with why he left.
The timing for his resignation was way too convenient. I'm also not buying his medical problems being the primary factor for his departure.
Totally agree. He knew that success in the post Tebow era was going to be MUCH tougher and that teams in the SEC had caught up with him, namely LSU & Bama. He saw the handwriting on the wall when Bama beat him in Tebow's last game (SEC Championship) and in 2010 when LSU beat the brakes off him. Yeah, the medical condition was REAL convenient. And he recovered just in time for the Ohio St. job opening. What a punk.
When he left FL (the 2nd time, and for good), Meyer said it was because of family. He wanted to see his daughters play sports, he wanted to be a good husband, father, etc. Then (if my memory is correct), after a short time in retirement, he quickly accepted a job with ESPN and hit the road for months at a time. I guess he did all that catching up with his daughters and re-connected with his wife at lightning speed. Only a great man can do that. Why any recruit would believe a word he says is beyond me. December 8, 2010|By Rachel George, Orlando Sentinel GAINESVILLE — Urban Meyer’s resignation a year ago was a knee-jerk reaction to a health scare. After his most unsuccessful season at Florida, he resigned again – this time for good and this time for family. Meyer ended his six-year tenure on Wednesday, stepping down from the program where he’d built his greatest success. He announced his resignation after going 64-15 with the Gators and winning two SEC championships and two national titles. For the time being, it brought an end to the career of one of the most successful coaches in the country. Meyer, 46, is the winningest among active coaches with 103-23 record, good for a .817 winning percentage in his 10 seasons as a head coach. But family was the reason for his resignation, Meyer repeated. Meyer has not seen daughters Nicki and Gigi – the first a sophomore at Georgia Tech, the second a high school senior who has signed with Florida Gulf Coast – play volleyball. “At the end of the day, I’m very convinced you’re going to be judged on how you are as a husband and a father, not how many bowl games we won,” Meyer said. “I missed those four years. “I can’t get that time back.
I have a Gator friend who was a big Meyer supporter and rejected a lot of the things we'd been saying about his recruiting practices and the reasons he left, until the Sporting News article came out. Now Meyer is pretty much dead to her. That's when you know it's bad.
Meyer rode Tebow's coattails as long as he could, making himself look like a genius coach in the process. As soon as he doesn't have his stud Timmy to lead him to the promised land anymore, he makes an excuse and bolts like the little bitch he really is.
