Report: Tebow illegally spoke to junior college recruit
Florida QB visited with heralded wide out right after winning Heisman

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow on Thursday entered the talk around Florida's internal review of Coach Urban Meyer's recruitment of junior-college wide receiver Carl Moore.

A December report in the Sacramento Bee indicates that Moore spoke with Tebow on the telephone the night the UF quarterback won the Heisman Trophy in New York. The report states Moore was at his family's residence in California when he received the call.

"Carl!" Tebow yelled into the phone, according to the report. "I just won the Heisman! Come on down here (to Florida), and let's win a national championship."

The article states that the call was placed by Coach Urban Meyer, who then handed the phone to Tebow. Such a move would violate a portion of NCAA Bylaw 13, which states that college athletes cannot speak to recruits by telephone when directed to by their coaches.

If Tebow placed the call, or Moore phoned Tebow, or Moore phoned Meyer and asked to speak with Tebow, the call likely would be legal. The Gainesville Sun, citing a source on its Web site Thursday, reported that Meyer believes Moore called Tebow after the trophy presentation.

Moore, Tebow and Meyer could not be reached for comment Thursday.

The circumstances surrounding the call could become part of the internal review led by Florida senior associate athletics director for compliance Jamie McCloskey. McCloskey and his staff are determining whether Meyer committed any violations, most of which would be minor, as he recruited Moore to sign with the Gators. The recruitment of first-year UF gymnast Maranda Smith, Moore's girlfriend, also falls under the review.

McCloskey said Tuesday that the review, which will include a check of telephone records and several personal interviews, might take a few weeks.

I think most of us do read the threads backwards, esp. for super long ones. However, for myself, I mostly end up reading the entire thread, though in reverse. Don't ask me why; maybe I don't want to miss any goodies:hihi::insane:

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida Coach Urban Meyer said the school's University Athletic Association has cleared him of any improper communication with recent football recruit Carl Moore and his girlfriend, Florida gymnast Maranda Smith.

Meyer said he met last week with Jamie McCloskey, Florida's senior associate athletics director for compliance. The coach emerged from that meeting thinking he had committed no NCAA recruiting violations.

"No problems with that," Meyer said. "We're fine."

Moore, one of the nation's top junior college receivers in 2007 at Sierra (Calif.) Community College, enrolled at Florida in January after the school announced the signing of his letter of intent on Dec. 19. Smith, a former Junior Olympic co-national champion in the vault and floor exercise, transferred to Florida in January after competing for UCLA in 2006 and spending last school year with Moore at Sierra.

The issues with their recruitment began with an article published in the Gainesville Sun's Jan. 16 editions. Smith told the newspaper that in an effort to help lure Moore, who hoped Smith would come east with him, Meyer began calling her.

"I used to talk to him every day back in November when he was recruiting Carl," Smith said, according to the newspaper report. "He kept asking how Carl was doing, and (he) wanted me to come here and do gymnastics."

Such actions by Meyer might have violated a portion of two NCAA bylaws: one limiting recruiting athletes in a certain sport to that sport's coaches; the other regulates which periods on the calendar coaches can contact recruitable athletes more than once per week.

McCloskey could not be reached for comment Monday to detail his department's investigation into the matter.

Smith competed for the Gators on bars in a Friday night home meet against Georgia. She remains listed on the team roster on the UF athletics Web site (gatorzone.com). Florida Assistant Athletic Director Steve McClain said Monday night that to his knowledge, Moore has not been deemed ineligible to participate with the football program.

pjnchamps, I remember reading that and pretty sure, a few days later, there was another report saying it wasn't and that one has UM saying everything was "Okay" but there was still an ongoing investigation- though I'm sure not much, specific to this incident anyway, will come of it. Collectively his actions may hurt him though, down the line.

yeah just saw rivals has it on their page.Hopefully his actions will catch up with him b/c most likely/maybe he probably going to feel a lil invincible after this and slip up again
