Unless said student was a student athlete I would say your friend is correct. But even commuter students should realize that the loss of athletics automatically downgrades your university and therefore your degree. So I agree with your friend that many students here could care less about athletics, but they should.
You can't denigrate The University of Louisiana! Thanks, I had no idea that was happening. UNO has the press conference archived if anyone wants to watch it. 29 minute video: UNO press conference
UNO is more than a commuter school. It has a very high percentage of non traditional students (i.e.) Older, married, and working full time students. Most of the people I knew were married and working full time...not in college type jobs, but in careers. They include also people who got laid off or are changing careers by retooling with college degrees. They often have children and have to face issues like childcare. Many own homes and have to face mortgage concerns. In short, they are like most of the posters here if they had to go back to school full time while working full time. Traditionally, they haven't cared at all about collegiate athletics and do not support ANY of the major sports because they have no time and disposable income to waste on sports. Most of them are like us and are actually LSU fans. I think the student body made the right decision not to bear the burden of supporting the athletic department because they realize that athletic programs have no bearing on their degrees or on their value in the workforce. Why waste all that money on having a division 1 athletic program. They were better off in the 60's and 70's when they were division 2 powerhouses. Even then, The "chamber of horrors" was virtually empty. Give up on athletics and market the arena aggressively for other things.
I pretty much agree with this. I went to UNO for a couple of semesters 2000 -2002 and transfered to LSU because I wanted a better college experience and to get a little further away from home. I was in the pep band and in most cases there were more people in the band and cheerleading squad than there were in the stands. This was especially true for the women's games. Even then most of the fans were probably family or friends. I would hate to see them lose their athletic department but it's not like they get much support anyways.
on a somewhat related note, uno just beat tulane in baseball, 11-2. i am so gonna pay if greenie sees me smiling over that. :hihi:
