I don't think it's necessarily a wise pick...but I do smile a bit knowing he went ahead of Andre Smith.
DE's in a 3-4 are nothing like LB's. Quite the opposite actually. LB's in 3-4 are much like DE's in 4-3 defenses. The Outside LB's are the pass rushers in 3-4 defenses (Demarcus Ware, Shawn Merriman, Jerrod Mayo, Joey Porter, etc.) That's the very reason Parcells no longer wanted Jason Taylor when he went to Miami. He knew Miami was switching to the 3-4, so Taylor was no use to them unless he switched to OLB, which he didn't want to do. The DE's in a 3-4 do some pass rushing, but they're primary job is run stopping and working with the nose tackle to keep the O-linemen tied up so the LB's can roam freely without having to shed 300+ pound tackles and pulling guards on every down. They'll get some sacks, as will the nose tackle, but it's mostly on blown plays, pocket collapses, etc. Pass rushing DE's are almost exclusively in defenses with four down lineman. Tyson was drafted to be a Richard Seymour. Not great at anything in particular, but pretty good to very good at everything else, and incredibly strong.
I didnt mean the positons were similar. I was saying that finding a five technique in a 3-4 isn't hard...just like you can find tons of LB's in free agency. The talent scale is not as large as other positions. Parcells dumped Taylor because he was old. Jason Taylor won the defensive MVP as a jack linebacker in a 3-4 hybrid just a year before he was released.

Gotcha...misunderstanding. I love this place... And for the record, I would've never spend a #3 pick on a DE in a 3-4 alignment. The good ones are indespensible (see Richard Seymour), the decent ones are forgettable (Marcus Spears, Jason Ferguson), but it's not hard to find a decent one. That position is heavily judged on how well the linebackers do. I would have grabbed Aaron Curry to play either inside or out since he has the skillset for both...or let Seattle trade with me and grab an extra couple of picks. But I guess Pioli is looking for his Richard Seymour even though he doesn't have his Vince Wilfork. Nothing against big Glenn, but they'd be better suited having him drop 10-15 lbs. and play the other end spot as opposed to bulking up to be the big space eater needed for the 3-4. I hope that's not they're intention...
