Okay - if we don't start the buzz about this now in 2011 then he won't have a chance to make it to NYC in 2012. So, here we go..... My Heisman frontrunner after one week minus one game: LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu. All he does is change games. SI beat-writer 9/5/11 Andy_Staples Mathieu named SEC Defensive Player of the Week Mathieu Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week - LSUsports.net - The Official Web Site of LSU Tigers Athletics In today's BR Advocate: "Mathieu moves up Mathieu again demonstrated his knack for big plays when he covered an LSU punt, forced a fumble, recovered the football and ran 3 yards for a touchdown. As a freshman last season, Mathieu forced five fumbles, recovered three fumbles, made two interceptions and had 4.5 sacks. “The ball just seems to pop right into my hands from time to time,” Mathieu said. Just 13 games into his Tigers career, Mathieu has tied Kelvin Sheppard (2007-10) and Clarence LeBlanc (1966-99) for second place in forced fumbles in a career (six). The leader is Ali Highsmith (2004-07) with seven."
I certainly would discourage this, but in all honesty, who was the last primarily defender to win the Heisman? Charles Woodson? And didn't he feature on offense a few times? That said, if PP didn't really factor in the final standings, I doube TM will.
Personally I would love to see the Heisman discontinued. To me it's a waste of time. Rarely does the best player win and it becomes more of a popularity contest. What I really don't like is how much time is devoted to talking about it. I would rather the additional time being devoted to talking about teams...not individuals. I couldn't care less about what the "talking heads" on ESPN think and who their favorite is. TM...screw the Heisman! Represent LSU well...give 100%...WIN...and your payday in the NFL will come. You surely don't need a Heisman for us to know who's the best!
It's a college football tradition and history so it will never go away. However, I'd like the "rules" for voting or the way the voters think, be adjusted. Wasn't the Heisman SUPPOSED to go to college football's most outstanding player?? That does NOT mean the best player on the best team...nor does it mean that the best player can't be on a team that's 5-6 or barely bowl elligible.
More credentials this week... #LSU DB Tyrann Mathieu named Jim Thorpe national defensive back of the week. He is also SEC and LSWA defensive player of the week. TweetDeck • 9/7/11 3:52 PM Retweeted by RandyRosetta
