I was in that corner of the endzone....I still think it was a catch, and the crying Sun Devils all around me were priceless.
Wasn't at that game, but it was awesome. I threw a keg off the balcony, ran down to get it and threw it off again. The greatest football play I've ever seen live also comes courtesy of Mr. Russell: YouTube - JaMarcus Russell spins twice & slings it 53 yds Does anyone remember his bomb to LaFell against UL Lafayette? It was arguably more impressive than the one vs. Ole Miss, but I can't find any videos online. Basically, it was a 60 yard bomb while getting tackled.
I remember 1 throw he launched to Xavier Carter that would have been a sure 70+ yard touchdown that Xavier let fall straight through the ole bread basket.. JR did throw a pretty ball, and he was extremely accurate with the quick slant and bubble screens....
Comparing Flynn to Russell isn't exactly fair considering the fact Russell was throwing to two first round picks in Buster David and Dwayne Bowe along with Doucet. Meanwhile Flynn was handicapped without his go-to guy for a large part of the season when Early Doucet was injured. JaMarcus was the typical Nick Saban quarterback. Big guy with a rocket arm and pretty athletic in that he's tough to take down one-on-one. Saban had Tony Banks at Michigan State, Rohan Davey and JaMarcus Russell at LSU, and then he signed Daunte Culpepper with the Dolphins. The irony is that the guys who were just heady quarterbacks who managed the games much better were ultimately the ones who won the Waterford crystal in Matt Mauck and Matt Flynn. Sometimes you don't need your quarterback to be the big play guy, but rather you just need the quarterback who can put the ball in the playmakers' hands most effectively to line up under center..
one (at least) of those was when LaFell lateraled it to an Auburn DB I think it goes without saying that the WR group was better in '06 than '07. Bowe, Buster, and Early was an amazing trio. Flynn played a good chunk of the following year without any of those guys, and LaFell had the worst case of the drops I ever saw. That tends to affect comp %, passer rating, yards, and TDs.
Ignoring the fact of course that "game manager" is the worst back-handed compliment you could give a QB, and "heady" is a pretty vague term, you're essentially saying that because they won championships, they were better quarterbacks. That's sort of glossing over the fact that the team LSU had in 07 had no business in the national championship game during any other year. Losing 2 games to unranked teams is usually not gonna get you very far.
Matt Flynn is a second-string quarterback to one of the game's future stars in Green Bay. JaMarcus is practically radioactive. No team wants to touch him. There's nothing wrong with being a game manager. It's smart. You take what is there and you don't try to create a play when it isn't. Brett Favre is the classic "gunslinger" or "riverboat gambler" type and he's gone home in consecutive postseasons throwing interceptions to Louisiana corners in Corey Webster and Tracy Porter. Drew Brees was the ultimate game manager in the Super Bowl going 32 for 39 and only taking what the defense was conceding. It ended up being good enough for one of the best quarterback performances in Super Bowl history and the MVP award. It's not a bad thing to know your limitations and to exercise sound judgement on the field for the good of your offense in terms of down and distance and for your team in terms of field position. That's called being aware and doing what it takes to win. You may not always be flashy, but you're almost always going to give your team the best chance to win. What better compliment is there?
Yea! What he just said! I take a "Smart" QB who knows the limits of himself and the play any day over a superior talent or a gunslinger. If that was the case, why wasn't Vick lighting up the NFL with his arm?
