I finally took the time to watch the Cotton Bowl. LSU's offense looked good, but some of that was A&M's horrible defense. I saw many times they had guys out of position, and not playing assignment football. A&M on offense wasn't much better. 2 of his INT's should have never been thrown. When he was sacked with the empty backfield and he fumbled, that should have never happened. He should have checked out of the play once LSU showed blitz. That's just to name a few. A&M was killing LSU with the halfback toss at first, but LSU adjusted, but A&M kept trying it, and getting nothing. (Note: Gray got the corner well early, if LSU doesn't defend that better, a faster LMJ/Barner/Huff, will hit that corner quicker.) Once A&M got behind, they threw the ball quite a bit more, which played right into LSU's hands, shutting them down for most of the 2nd half. Am I close in my evaluation? I only watched the compilation plays on YouTube. I don't have time to watch the game in real time. That being said, Oregon was better than A&M last year. Oregon was statistically better in almost every major category. Against arguable the same quality of competition as the Big 12. They had a better passing yards average, but threw almost twice as many INT's as Oregon, with a huge difference in T.O. margin. The rushing totals are to be expected. It's going to be a great game, I can't wait!
Yeah, Crowton was a bust here as well. He was an improvement at the time over Andy Ludwig. His offense was to predictable. How do you think the sudden change with Krag dropping out of the OC to coach QB's, and a new OC coming in as fall camp starts, is going to effect the team?
Rookie mistake on the A&M conclusion. In your response, I would like to hit on the mention of A&M’s horrible D….. They were ranked 55th in comparison to Oregon’s 33rd with a separation of 20 yards per game. Secondly, you mentioned their O to be no better than their D which actually ranked 23rd last year. But to the point on A&M’s O, they started the season 3-3 with their senior QB, who is also known as JJ. Well they replaced him and went down the stretch with Tannehill who had the following stats in 7 games (bowl included): · 1638 yards · 13 TD’s · 6 int’s (3 in LSU game) · 65% comp He did play 13 games, but he was a WR before the QB switch. Aside from blatant bias, you obviously do not have a clue that LSU’s game plan always changes for the team it is facing. I am not too sure why fans claim to say that int’s fumbles and things of that nature should never happen? It is the effects of a physical D laying down pressure on the QB. Those were and will always be forces fumbles and int’s. Get over it!! About the edges, A&M’s offense is nowhere near the spread style that Oregon runs. Oregon HAS to make use of smaller speedy players to get the edges quick, create space and make a play. Thus, you will see a D strategy that will account for this and force Oregon to either: A) Beat us to the edge and make a play B) Force the ball in the interior (suicide) C) Stretch the field with the pass
You will likely see a 55-60% power run O. For the most part, the offense won’t change other than to call plays that ACTUALLY play into JJ’s strengths, which is a mobile moving QB supported by a STRONG power run game. You know, 275lb fullbacks and things like that…..
tough question. i thought our offense would be significantly better before the announcement of krag stepping down, but i don't think too much has changed in our scheming and playcalling. in any case, studrawa was there during the entire process so it should be a smooth(er) transition. the most important fact, for me, is that kragthorpe is still working intimately with our QB's. from all sources i have read, crowton couldn't have done things any more differently. there were just times the last few years where JJ would screw up and sulk on the bench with nobody in his ear coaching him up. he was a young guy left to his own devices, and i feel that he needed somebody there to get his azz in gear. hopefully that is where krag comes in. now i don't know if it's too late for JJ, whether he has the leadership skills required or not, but it is time for him to put up and carry his weight. it ain't easy playing QB for LSU, and i like the guy but our team needs him to at least be effective for this team to be special. sometimes i can't get over how poorly he's played at times to remember how talented he really is. he could be an absolute stud.
You act like we've never seen big fullbacks. Southern California and Stanford have BEAST fullbacks every year.
oregon could have scored more that penalty was not the reason they lost. Oregon had the ball for the last like 9 minutes and just burned the clock down
UT was a young team last year, its very possible that Oregon didnt shut them down, rather the lack of depth chart caught up with them. On another note, if LSU runs the hurry up and runs the football right down Oregons throat 7 to 8 plays in a row, you wont be able to get you line changes in, your guys will be toasted just like ours right? Or are you going to tell me that, that wont happen your guys find a way to stop that and we are only hurting ourselves.
No I don’t feel like you make much sense. 1st - If you are going to credit LSU's offense in that game to poor aggie defense because players were out of position - That’s football 101 the same could be said about the defense's against Oregon in just about all 12 games last year. That’s just football, it’s the offenses job to catch you off balance, that’s why we have audible, and check downs, and so on.... 2nd - The two interceptions by Mathieu and Reid were GREAT READS AND GREAT PICKS!!! Come on bro, those were defensive game changers, not Offensive errors, TM made a diving pick and maintained possession as he was going to ground!!! - WHAT THE HELL does he have to do to earn a little damn credit bro??? 3rd - The sack, force fumble, again that’s a defensive played made, not an offensive mistake 4th - Cyrus Gray is EXTREMELY fast, he is a very talented RB don’t take anything away from him and you are right LSU did make the adjustments to shut him down. You have to start respecting this LSU football team a little more, you continue to just take away from us and take away from us.....
