LSU has been amazing in track, especially womens. But you cant really say they dominated when arky has won 42 track natl championships in mens alone...oh well Id rather win :crystal: once (or in our case twice) than 42 track championships.
I know zero about track and field other than the track and field events in the Olympics that I have personally got to follow during the Olympics. You could have told me that NCAA student-athletes were allowed to compete in the USA National Indoor Championships and I would have believed it for all I know about the world of track and field. But it does appear that the USA National Indoor Championships are for professional athletes only, not NCAA student-athletes... and, from what I can tell, Lolo Jones (LSU grad '05) did win back-to-back US Championships in the 60m hurdle (in both the 2007 USA Indoor Champsionships and the 2008 USA Indoor Championships). At the IAAF 2008 World Indoor Championships in Spain she won the 60m hurdle -- in other words, I assume that means she was the world champion, not just the US Champion, in the indoor 60m hurdle in 2008. Also, she has recorded the second-fastest meet-record in US history (during a 2008 meet in Germany) when it comes to the 60m hurdle event. At the world level, she also finished #5 in the 100 yard dash in the 2006 IAAF World Athletics Final, #6 in the 100m hurdles in the 2006 IAAF World Athletics Final, and #6 in the 100m hurdles in the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Athletics. What the difference between the IAAF World Athletics Final and the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, I have no idea. :insane:
Well she is right that LSU has dominated in women's track and field. Over the last 22 years, the LSU women won the National Title in outdoor track 13 times and the National Title in indoor track 11 times. As for the Arkansas women, they have NEVER won a National title in track and field, indoor or outdoor. Now sure, as for the men, Arkansas is The Dynasty. Over the last 16 years, the Arkansas men have won the National Title in outdoor track 11 times (the LSU men won it once during that period), and over the last 25 years, the Arkansas men have won the National Title in indoor track 19 times (the LSU men won it twice during that period). Point is that LSU did not dominate in men's track (that was Arkansas that did that), but LSU did dominate in women's track.
can someone weigh in on trindon holidays chances to make the olympic team? To me from what little i know and can gleam from what i've seen. I don't think he makes the olympic team in which case i believe he will be back for the beginning of fall camp. He came in second at the SEC championships and is consistantly beaten in the 100m by his teammate Thompson whenever track results are posted or are in the news.
Not sure of his chances but I know the chances are higher he will at least make the relay team. Miles said awhile back if he makes the Olympics he will be back on the field for the Auburn game. Assuming he does not go pro. I think he will be back for another season.
If Hollliday has a chance to be the best and command serious pro track money, then this is the time to do it. That kind of world-class track speed doesn't last forever and he has to get it while he can. But . . . if he falls just a little bit short of the top tier right now, he's not going to get any faster as he gets older. So he might be prudent and play LSU football sparingly as a return specialist, in the hopes of an NFL contract where he would have great returner speed for several more years. He needs a fallback if track doesn't pan out. Only the star track athletes really make good money and they often don't make it for very long, but the NFL minimum salary is almost $400,000.
I think it's wait and see. Holliday has 10.05 and is tied for the 3rd best time for the USA this season. Yea, Thompson has been beating him alot but that won't matter except to maybe push Holliday to run faster because he's from Trinidad. The 100m is a stacked event and there are plenty of contenders, so maybe only Tyson Gay would be considered a shoe-in at this point. Still plenty of time to improve before the trials.
Only 31 of Arkansas' championships have been in track. The other 11 have been in cross country which LSU has never made a serious commitment to compete in at the highest level. One of the reasons is that Arkansas is a distance school and LSU is sprint school. Of LSU's 30 track championships, 6 of them have been on the men's side while Arkansas's women have never done anything noteworthy in track. Also, on three occasions, 1989 outdoor, 1990 outdoor and 2004 indoor, LSU swept both the men's and women's national titles in the same year.
Also, Holliday has more upside than Thompson because his technique is flawed while Thompson's technique has very little room for improvement.
