its been a long time since ive been to LSU on a gameday, but i know preSaban at least it was never like this scene at UGA. this is not an anomaly. i saw similar trashed areas on a Sunday morning last year too. "More than 70 tons of trash were processed by American Stadium Services this weekend alone. The amount of trash was more than usual because it was a night game, according to Whittemore, meaning people tailgated longer than they would for an earlier game." TAILGATE TRASH: What happens to campus on game days? - News
I took these after the Washington game. I thought that people up there were supposed to be all environmentally friendly.
LSU puts trash cans every 50 feet on game days, but they still get full and overflow. There are certain crowded places where it gets like that. But campus organizations get to make money by picking up trash on Sundays.
yeah, the guys distributing the cans usually come by our spot around 7:30. if we weren't there to catch them and request more cans, they'd leave a can or two. they give us about 6 cans and two recycling bins for our spot every game plus there's an LSU permanent can by our spot and we come pretty close to filling them all on a gameday. i actually spoke to someone at facility services before the 08 season and asked why some areas were so trashy. he said there aren't enough trash cans to go around. i asked if LSU was going to buy more, he said "it's on the list." of course he said it in a way that made me think the list was pretty long and trash cans were pretty close to the bottom.
some are trying to get the guys that check parking passes to hand out trash bags to each car. sounds like the UGA prez has issued a warning to fans and if it doesnt get better they will start issuing citations.
It’s a multifold issue. My wife is the new sustainability manager on campus and with budget cuts, we are lucky they created the position, much more they kept it. First - need to get the drunks to recycle and actually make it to the trash can. Second - the recycling manager has no budget. The recycling bins he gets are from East Baton Rouge Parish or other donations. With that, LSU was second in the SEC in on campus recycling. Third - you might be right about were purchasing new trash cans fits on the list, but facility services list has been cut by the new budget cuts. Fourth - Athletics is in control of the stadiums. They have not put forth a large effort to recycle yet, but just need some persuading by the public. Maybe we need to persuade Dan Bourne to announce it , inside joke. Best I can say is email chancellor martin to have purchasing more tailgate trash cans put higher on the budget list. He is very supportive of LSU sustainability and campus greening efforts. And email the athletic department to get recycle bins put in the main part of the stadium and not just the stadium club and suites.
