This post says it all. The only thing I can add is to say I wish they wouldn't have a preseason poll to begin with.
There are also fans who thing you should be penalized for NOT playing a conference championship game. Most fans I've come across thinks the system their team uses is PERFECT and anyone using a different one should be penalized. Penalizing a team for playing a 1-AA team is actually quite funny. There are probably more than just a handful of 1-AA teams that are better than that D1 Idaho team USC faced last year. I mean does anyone seriously think there is this massive drop off from the bottom 1/4 of D-1 to the top 1/4 of 1-AA just because of the letters behind a schools name? Yes, I know USC scheduling a team like Idaho is a rarity, I'm only using it as an example of how flawed that train of thought is.
Auburn's actual slight is the crazy notion that you should rank teams before the season even starts. Auburn being ranked #17 is what spelled their doom. We need to start ranking teams at or around the first week in October (3 games into the season, or thereabouts).
Only those who HAVE a CCG and do so for the revenue. Playing a round robin is STILL > playing Div1AA games at home. I don't know about perfect but I'd agree that most fans like/defend the system they are in. And yet USC still has never played a Div1AA team and there is a reason why there ARE different divisions. Would you rather pay your money to see LSU play The Citadel or Idaho? Perhaps no more than there is a supposed massive dropoff between the SEC and all other conferences. And if the difference was not such a big deal then why did everyone drop their drawers when Michigan lost to Appy St? And I would argue that using an exception to argue a train of thought is a trainwreck. Div1AA teams are starting to show up in greater numbers as it's becoming obvious that you can shore up your W's, still get to the NCG and not get penalized for it.
I think the BCS stopped the preseason poll last year. The first one is 2-3 weeks into the season (can't remember exactly).
I thought the first BCS poll was always in October. In any case the human polls that factor into the BCS are still pre-season. And as we saw last year they carry a lot of weight.
First, I will say I HATE, I mean HATE, that we schedule I-AA opponents EVER. In case I didn't make myself clear, I DESPISE it. Now, having said that, it's idiocy to penalize a team for playing a I-AA team instead of a Duke, Idaho, Ole Miss :hihi:, or ULL. THESE are not the teams that say anything about how good a team that's trying for the national championship is. IF you ask me, beating #3, #7, #111, and #117 is greater than beating #23, #27, #91, and #97, even though averaging their rankings would suggest they are the same. It always irritates the crap out of me when I see people try to blast our schedule for having a I-AA team (usually being because a better team backed out at the last minute *cough*Virginia Tech*cough*) when that schedule also has 3 or more teams in the Top 15, then compare it to a schedule that has no Top 15's but played pushovers like Notre Dame and hail it because of the names of the schools.
The only thing that's changed with the timing of the BCS is that the Harris poll doesn't come out til the BCS does. The AP and Coaches still release preseason polls. Also, in reality, the Harris poll is affected by preseason polls because those voters basically use the AP or Coaches as a starting point to make their rankings anyway.
I agree completely with this statement. Also in regards to LSU, last season I think we played a total of 7 or 8 top 25 teams, granted some of them didn't finish the season that way but they were in the top 25 when we played them. When you have that type of strength in your schedule a I-AA team here and there shouldn't penalize you.
