According to Ted Miller/ESPN, the Top 10 BCS slights are: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3403882 LSU fans won't agree with #1 for sure as ESPN's love for the Trojans shows thru. The rest is FWIW/discussion.
Why? It doesn't say LSU shouldn't have been there. The article is about being snubbed, not about the actual game. And it isn't an ESPN love thing....... I bet a good majority of college football fans, writers, coaches, don't believe the best matchup occurred in 2003. I've seen folks on this board admit that USC v LSU would have been the best. If not, then why so much talking AFTER the game about setting up an unofficial game between the two?
USC has something to gripe about but they did get respect from the AP voters and a shiny trophy to boot. In lieu of how well the SEC has acquitted itself in the NCG, I think Auburn's slight belongs in the #1 spot, and not just cause an Aubie posted this link. The SOS has been well documented, but I can't also help but think that USC handling Auburn the year before, played into that for some of the voters. It should not have, but I have always believed that.
This LSU fan completely agrees with #1. OU lost their conference and was completely exposed and humiliated in the process. Aside from Sooner fans, not many people wanted to see that team with a chance to play for it all.
In 2003...it could have been Oklahoma or USC...they both had an argument. Fortunately for the BCS...the best team won the National Championship that year! :helmet::crystal::helmet:
I also think Auburn's sleight was the worst. OU didn't belong in the game in '03 OR '04, and they don't frankly belong in the discussion for the coming year, either. USC was sleighted in '03, but they did win the AP trophy and took away LSU's thunder--that did make many of us LSU fans angry (as we DID deserve to be there with all the requisite glory.) Stoops' post-season work, for the past 5 or 6 years, has been pathetic--and maybe the element of surprise was the only reason that he beat FSU in 2000.
There are not many years where that does happen. TX vs USC is the only recent one to come to mind. The majority of that was angst over the "shared title". Also both programs are at a peak and it's natural to want to settle it. For me personally, I have unsettled business with Nebraska dating back to '85 and '86, but Nebraska is not currently a powerhouse(Bo will change that), so there is no conversation about it. If Carroll leaves you guys and you slide, there will be less talk about meeting up, or vice versa with us and Miles.
I don't expect any to agree but I'll tell you why I think Auburn isn't the #1 snub. An argument could be made that USC deserved a shot over either LSU OR Oklahoma especially because our one loss was in DOT on the road to a conference rival (undefeated in regulation, right?). Auburn OTOH only really had an argument against Oklahoma. USC started the season ranked #1 and ended #1. Auburn started ranked 17th and 18th and had a weak non-conference schedule. And yes, getting shut out AT HOME by USC the prior year played a part.
I tend to agree here. It looks like a huge snub for two reasons. 1) We look back at how badly Oklahoma was beaten in that game and say they didn't belong and 2) an undefeated SEC team makes all of us think of how pissed we'd be if it (god forbid) ever happend to LSU. When you look at the regular season and the schedules the three teams played, I just don't see many objecctive reasons to place Auburn in the top 2.
Okay, what I gather from this thread is that Oklahoma is the root of all evil...damn Stoops! :hihi: Also...the rankings start WAY TOO EARLY and can really screw things up and the season progresses. Strength of schedule should also get more emphasis than going undefeated against weaker teams. (Yes BYU 1984, I'm calling you out! o
