I think it may have as much to do with Tony Franklin as it does the spread. A guy like Crowton can run some spread and also run it down your throat traditionally. Tony Franklin would probably not bend his system (his system, give me a freakn break) to accomodate Auburn's personel. Those "spread recruits" may fit fine with the right coach that can mix it up.
I just don't know if AU has that stud RB package like in years past. Lester and Tate are both pretty good, but not stars like they have had at RB for like 15 years or something. I think that is a big factor in why their offense isn't doing much. It's not like they haven't tried to run it. Hell, Tate ran 27 times I think against Vandy. He got over 100 yards, but it was around 4 yards a carry. That's a good average, but I just don't think they have the homerun backs like in the past. Also, they can't seem to decide on a QB and I can't name one of their receivers.
I heard if your a highschool coach, you can buy "The Tony Franklin System" for $3k. Maybe he just let everyone in on it too early?
Tubbs has had five offensive coordinators and five defensive coordinators in his ten years there. He is the Anti-Dinardo.
Speaking of coaches peddling their systems, who can forget this CLASSIC? Funniest thing used to be the comments left by angry LSU fans. By now, I'm sure the Tepper apologist have pushed all of the negative comments to different pages.
Personally I think Tubby will do anything not to lose to Saban this year, even if that means firing his new O-coordinator. I think it's a smart move on his part. Tubby is old school, I doubt he was ever 100% on board with the spread to begin with.
And yet he said this today: Now does that make sense to anyone? Keep the offense that is not working but fire the guy that first taught it to your players? Just "try to get better at it"??
Maybe Franklin did something to rub him the wrong way. Perhaps Franklin threw some players under the bus and it was the last straw for TT.
