For chits and giggles... How many active head coaches, that never played the sport, can you name out of FBS teams? I can think of two quickly...
One of the better OL coaches in college, Rick Trickett never played the position, he was a Safety in college. As for Head Coaches, here is a couple I knew, and a few I didn't ... http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2038878-top-10-college-football-head-coaches-who-never-played
Franchione, from a baseball background, was probably the first that made me look more deeply at playing/coaching roots. Most, if not all, know about Leach—at least I'd think so. Forgot about Weis and Cut but knew their history. The others are new to me as well. (I'm surprised I didn't see it mentioned with Clark as much as he's been in conversations the last several weeks.)
Interesting that Notre Dame had hired 2 head coaches in the recent past that had never actually played organized football: Weiss and O'Leary.
O'Leary was a strange one. Not long after it went down, I called a friend of mine and asked what he was doing, he replied, "Just like everyone else, reworking my resume!" Coaches all over were doing the same thing, getting dates, times, jobs worked, everything on a resume correct. They were getting conformation on everything. They wanted paperwork on every job. Fax machines were running more than signing day. Like he said, " I don't want to get my dream job and have something on my resume end it for me!"
Geez pokie, sure you can comment, but why make it sound as if I didn't say I like the hire, I clearly posted that "I like the hire"
It ain't always about you, cuz. The comment was not about you "liking the hire". It was about career coaches that have experience teaching multiple positions.
