I'm glad only 2 numbers are retired. Think back to Title, Van Buren, Taylor and even the more recent all-time record holders like Bert Jones, Dalton Hilliard and Kevin Faulk and see how not even they have their jerseys retired. It shows how extraordinarily special a player has to be to get theirs retired. What would be a couple they could retire, though?
Seeing as before the Cannon/Bandits era he was LSU football, Y.A. Tittle might be a candidate. But even that might be a stretch. Hall of fame is one thing, jersey retirement is a whole different level of excelence.
Two old timers come to mind who should be seriously considered. Doc Fenton and Gaynell Tinsley. Both are in the College Football Hall of Fame and were All-Americans.
That's crazy, the guy that sits next to me asked me at the last game if I thought they would ever retire another jersey and hang it next to Cannon. I didn't have a clue, but I guess he has his answer now.
So....does Karnell Hatcher have to give up his number? (Awesome news and perfect theater for the Florida game.)
Tommy Cassanova is my alltime favorite tiger and i can remember laying on the floor with my brother and dad listening to LSU games called by John Ferguson. I became an LSU fan at the age of three in 1964. And have been one ever since. It is part of who i am. My dad has always been an LSU fan and he passed it on to me and my brother. I didnt get to attend LSU due to finance situations but LSU is the school of my State and i will always be LSU and Louisiana proud. Living in California since 2001 i find myself clinging to things that remind me of home and the feeling that i get when i return for visits. I miss living there and God willing i will retire back there when i am able. Dont take for granted our tigers or being able to enjoy the magic that Tiger Stadium becomes when it is alive these few times in a season. I look at it as hallowed ground and the times i have been privledged enough to attend games i feel a special place in my soul and i cherish every second. It has many glorious memories to embrace. And many more to come. Lets give em hell Tigers and even though i cant be there in person i will be there in spirit pulling for my team. Geaux Tigers
Is Ben's retired jersey for basketball or baseball? What about the jersey's of Pete Maravich, Shaq and Bob Pettit? How about Warren Morris and Wally Pontiff? Jerry Stovall's #21 is deserving of retirement but Dalton Hilliard also wore #21 and is equally deserving. And then there is the mainstay of the 2003 National Championship defense, Glenn Dorsey Louis Coleman had tow oustanding season in LSU's 2008 amazing run to the CWS in 2008 and the 2009 CWS National Championship season. Both as a starter and in crucial relief roles. Is Coleman deserving of jersy retirement?
