His will hang in lights next to Billy Cannon's. A Letter from Joe Alleva - LSUsports.net - The Official Web Site of LSU Tigers Athletics
Well deserved and I wonder why it took so long? Rudy Macklin and Ben McDonald also are having their jersey's retired. Googled and found this: To have a jersey retired at LSU, an athlete must have completed intercollegiate competition for LSU a minimum of five years prior to nomination. Athletes must have demonstrated truly unusual and outstanding accomplishments, exceeding and in addition to all criteria used for Hall of Fame selection. The athletic performance must be considered unique, such as winning of a Heisman Trophy or National Player of the Year award, and should be based on the total LSU career. Athletes may also be considered for making dramatic impact on the popularity of his or her sport or for significant participation in positive change in LSU Athletics. Nominees must have a unanimous vote of support from the Hall of Fame committee.
Well, I am not one of the million fans who claim to have seen Cannon make the Halloween run. I wasn’t there but was listening to the game at my aunt’s house. However, I did see Cannon play other games. I also saw Jim Taylor, Jerry Stovall, Al Coffee, Bert Jones, Andy Hamilton, Hilliard and James, and lots of other Tigers play and I have to say that Casanova is my all time favorite Tiger. This is a well deserved honor - and yes, long overdue. ldskule:
I echo everyone's sentiments and agree that it was long overdue. What's everyone's opinion on the criteria to having a number retired? Seems awfully strict to me. Granted you shouldn't go overboard but only two football numbers retired?
My initial thought is the criteria we have makes this a very, very special honor and we should stick with it.
