I still remember when he made that kick. I was listening to the game on the radio in BR as a 14 y/o at a friend's house. TV blackout, as usual. Sounded like a typical Saints loss when Errol Mann hit the FG to put the Lions up 17-16. I was about to turn off the radio when they announced the FG try, for the record and the win. We were transfixed as the announcer was inaudible for several minutes, the crowd was so loud. I still can't believe he made it to this day. I still can't believe the Saints have only won 1 playoff game since then.
What detracts from the Dempsy kick is that the ball was placed on a tee. Elam of couse got to kick his in the thin air of Denver. If you had to pick which one was the most impressive, I'd say the Bucs kick. Also, although it was only 60 yards, Morten Anderson's kick several years ago probably might have gone farther than all the others. He booted the crap out of that ball.
Yup I think that's the one, sorry about getting the name slightly off but that was back in the early 70's. We used to get all of our St Johns Eagles gear there. It didn't help much as Saint Aluishus still kicked the crap out of us every year as did most of the other Catholic schools in the BTR area lol.
St. Aloysius. So, my Redemptorist Wolves took y'all to the woodshed too? :hihi: Yeah, it's the same athletic gear house I got my stuff from too....
OMG!! Not Redemptorist!! Redemptorist= Ogi Olglethorp Noooooo lol Apologies for the St. Aloysius spelling. What I remember most about that school was their high dollar uniform$. We'd trot out there lucky to have two guys on the team in matching gear and St. Aloysius would show up looking like the Dallas Cowboys. Our best play was to give the ball to big ol Gilbeaux and then everyone shove him through the line. Long time ago but it still it was a hoot! :laflagwav Cheers! HCT
You might very well be right about that. I still remember how the ball looked like it was shot out of a cannon.....the O-line blew out the D-line and flattened them so that Morten could kick it lower than usual. The ball didn't even rotate (end over end), it was just flat sailing thru the air. Was a sight to see. I always thought Morten would be the one to break the record. But the chance never came. Was that 60 yarder to win the game, or was it kicked on the last play of the first half?
I think you are right, it was against the Bears. And yes, I think it was right before halftime. I think Elam's was right before halftime too.
