I once heard in an economics class about this concept called profit, and in a finance class about this thing called ROI. Seriously, a mod (99?) once posted numbers showing contributors and non-contributors; the number of people who actually support this site was embarrassingly low.
The site owner and administrator, Brett, uses the money to fund the upkeep and maintenance of the forum. For several years he provided the site free of charge for everyone. As the site grew in membership numbers, it became incresingly more and more expensive to maintain. Rather than making this a premium pay only site, he asked us members to contribute in order to help out. One reason you may have missed the information on contributing is because Brett really does not make a point to ask members to pay money. He has tried to keep it voluntary. Those who contribute get access to the other forums, a couple of private contributor only forums, usage of custom signatures, and the ability to participate in the reputation system. There may be more things that I just can't think of at the moment. As of right now, there are 298 contributors to TigerForums. At a rate of $19.95 per year for the minimum yearly contribution, that works out to just under $6,000 per year. I truly hope Brett is making *some* profit here.
