Unfortunately, I know some teachers like that. I'd imagine those exist in all professions involving kids. As for his comment I'm not sure I'm connecting the dots. Anyone could go back and say, "Oh that guy gave me the creeps." I think he feels like a fool for being fooled and this is, in his mind, some kind of damage control. In his own words, "So I wrote a favorable story about a guy who was already a sexual predator", so it's not like he wasn't fooled. He also said, "Writers love to have their stuff quoted ... unless the quotes make you look like a jerk, as these do. So go ahead, Deadspin, have at it." I scanned over it quickly so I may have missed something. Y'all lemme know if I did. I want to know if I start slippin.
And there they'll finally get true justice. I wonder if they know what happens to child abusers in prison?
Martin, I think that last part is a bit over the top. First, the primary profile of abusers of children is the non-parental spouse of the child's parent. That's not to say that all adoptive parents are abusers; far from it. It's just to say that the vast majority of kids abused are victims of someone they know well. Second, what the Penn State and the abuse crisis in the Catholic Church show is that leaders will often override their obligations to justice in order to prevent embarrassment of a friend. Let's be clear: if Paterno covered up knowledge of Sandusky's actions, it was because he wanted to protect him, not to protect Penn State. The admin higher ups probably had the same thought in terms of protecting Paterno (that is, to not let people think that he has such a moral blindspot.) That they were so invested in the image of "JoePa" representing Penn State is only a (albeit big) secondary concern. This case, as with well documented cases involving schools, other religious congregations, and businesses, shows that there is no correlation between any belief of the Catholic Church and covering up abuse cases. Third, leadership is tough. Ask yourself, if you suddenly found this out about the best friend you have ever had, would you immediately go to the police? I don't ask this to justify anybody's reaction, but to point out that leaders often have to develop a sense of objectivity about everyone around them to really carry out their role. For too long, we thought JoePa had done that, and we were wrong. I can't imagine playing a football game under these circumstances, and am surprised Penn State didn't forfeit the rest of the season. GEAUX TIGERS
Sometimes, less than you would think. My EX brother in law molested both of his daughters. Liberal (we can reform him) judge, new jr prosecutor, wife who didn't think what he did was "that bad" and he did 6 MONTHS in county jail. Our penal system has too many cracks. Ex b in law needs to be removed from this earth.
Along with the Penn St. brass, these cops and DA who originally investigated this case need to be charged with malfeasance or some type of crime. They've got the guy admitting what he did and they STILL didn't file any charges? I can't wrap my mind around that and would love to know why.
