We drink the purple koolaid #1 because its pretty frikkin awesome, and #2 because THATS WHAT THEY SERVE HERE. Yes, this team has its problems, but if all the other teams didn't have their problems, there would be clear-cut #1 and #2 teams. Can I get an AMEN???
Injuries acknowledged. A bigger factor perhaps, Flynn's schitzophrenic play? What could score have been at end 1Q against AK? What could D have done with, say, a 21 pt cushion? Has anyone won a NC with a QB who takes 3Q's off? If we had a Ryan or a Daniel or a mere (reliable) Maulk, would we be in NC. 2005 Miami bowl game & 2007 VT game were similar: great play by Flynn and the defence. Love & Marriage, Horse & Carriage etc. Mix in 1) the apparent complete & utter absence of prep for some back-ups e.g. Jai Eugene in KY game, 2) the penalty yardage, and 3) the absence of blitz on THE 4th & 10 play, and you end up 7th behind GA & VT. The team that beat VT was Championship caliber, and a joy to behold. The team that lost to AK & nearly Ole Miss was decidedly not. 7th might still be flattering. Que sera, sera.
Well truth be told its all those things and a few more...we've had the same reoccurring problems all season long. It started to show itself in the Tulane game. These problems should have been fixed long ago...since they've not, you have to hang it on coaching at some level, but, by the same token all the other things folks are posting are having an effect too I believe. It all comes down to this. This is NOT a NC caliber team at this point. The Tigers are damned good even with the flaws...but I believe more in the range of 3rd or 4th. Sadly guys, as badly as I we all wanted them to play for a NC it ain't gonna happen...we were just a handful of points within reach.
I think the quality of play has declined every game over the last half of the season. Even with that, if Doucet plays against Kentucky, I think we win; if Holliday plays against Arkansas, I think he could have been key to a likely win. That being said, I still wonder if Doucet was good to go against Kentucky, but was held out because it was viewed as a game we should have won without him? I was wondering the same thing about Holliday on Friday, but he wasn't even dressed and I haven't heard anything on his status, so I still have no idea how seriously he is injured. The question that lingers in my mind is could they have played? That's all I really have to say about injuries. Every team gets them over the course of a season. Championship teams overcome them; other teams use them as excuses. Hopefully there won't be any excuses come Saturday, and we'll bring home another SEC Championship.
It's been a difficult season- from a players point of view. Sure hope there's enough left in the tank to be UTenn. :geaux:
