Paul Mainieri has rebuilt the Tigers in the image of Skip Bertman's powerful teams of the 1990s, with dominant pitching and hitting carrying LSU into the best-of-three College World Series finals against No. 1 national seed Texas starting Monday.
"This team is as good as any LSU team in the 1990s," Bertman said with emphasis Saturday.

Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido has his own version of Murphy's Law.
"If you have a weakness, baseball will find it," Garrido said. "It always will. Eventually. And it will probably find it at the worst time possible."

LSU fans, with their steaming pots of jambalaya and gumbo, have spiced up the College World Series for 23 years.
You see, friends, in Omaha even the law is partial to LSU.
Mystical place
The sign at Haworth Park calls this Bellevue campground the “New Dingerville.”
But it’s not new, it’s a little worn and, for a generation, it’s been home plate during the College World Series to Chuck’s RV and dozens like it with Louisiana license plates.
Stroll through Haworth on a sticky night and you can hear stories about Todd Walker and Lyle Mouton and, of course, Skip Bertman.
LSU made its first CWS appearance in 1986. Things didn’t go so well. The Tigers lost to Loyola Marymount after Albert Belle dropped a fly ball. They fell short again in ’87, ’89 and ’90.
Chuck first showed up in 1991, and LSU’s luck changed.
