BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU has bolstered its pitching staff for the 2006 season> with the signing of a pair of right-handers. Derik Olvey, a transfer from Notre Dame, and Louis Coleman, a product of Pillow Academy in Greenwood, Miss., began attending classes at LSU Monday, and they will be eligible to pitch for the Tigers this spring.

Olvey, a native of Pelham, Ala., pitched two seasons at Notre Dame, and he will begin his LSU career as a junior. The 6-3, 210-pounder hurler made 16 appearances (five starts) for the Fighting Irish last season, posting a 2-2 mark with a 5.59 ERA. In 48.1 innings, Olvey recorded 15 walks and 25 strikeouts.
Coleman, a 6-4, 195-pound all-state performer, was the 28th-round selection last summer of the Atlanta Braves in the Major League Draft. A versatile athlete at Pillow Academy, Coleman also was a .400 hitter and he played for the Mustangs’ football squad.

Coleman is one of four drafted LSU freshmen who attended classes Monday, the first day of the university’s fall semester. The other signees who elected to enroll at LSU instead of beginning a pro baseball career are outfielder Jarred Bogany (15th round – Pittsburgh Pirates), catcher Robert Lara (17th round – Minnesota Twins) and infielder Jason Ogata (50th round – San Diego Padres).
