At one point it was a given that he'd pass Nicklaus, he may do it yet. I hope he doesn't. I don't like his cursing on the course. I don't like his arrogance, but many of the best players in all sports have been arrogant, and I understand that, they're the best. But I never liked the way Tiger disrespected the traditions of golf with his language in particular. It's kind of funny, back in the 60's I didn't like Nicklaus cause I thought he was too good. You started a tournament and expected Jack to win it. I pulled against him. Now, I'd be very happy to see him keep the most major victories, but my personal feeling is Tiger's mind is not on his game with the divorce this year, and in the future he will come back and win 5 or more majors and pass Jack. The only thing that stops it is injury.
He actually used 3 wood much more off the tee during those times compared to now where you rarely see him do so. He can hit the 3 wood just about as far as the others using drivers on tour when on his game. He gets himself into trouble often with the driver and it has an effect. We already discussed the horrible putting on this thread and Hank Haney was also his putting coach. Might have some manageable puts if he is consistently hitting from the fairway instead of hitting from behind trees or taking drops given his iron play has always been his strong suit.
I did some work for CBS as a spotter from 1991-2002 and I can assure you that Tiger is not the only golfer to use a 4 letter word. He does it more than most and always has the boom mike nearby to catch the outbursts. I'm not defending him, I'm just telling you he's not alone. And yes, I once heard Jack mutter a mild profanity.
I think he should wait til the end of the year before getting a coach. Let the family issue resolve, and the media get off his ass about it before getting a coach involved in all this mess.
Another Tiger stat: According to Golf Channel last night, Tiger's avg. driving distance is falling, he was averaging 293 off the tee in the British Open, one of his lower figures. At one time, he averaged around 305. Getting older? Wear and tear on his knees? We don't know what stress his swing has done to his shoulders and spine. All interesting things to watch.
no more 'roids?:lol: Galea is under FBI investigation, so no source to obtain. just like MLB HRs are down, so is Woods driving...... coincidence? i think not. seriously, who knows? dudes got a lot on his plate. he admits to practicing less so he can see his kids now that they have shared custody. i am sure there are several factors going on.
I met & spoke with Ken Venturi on the driving range @ Castle Pines on the Monday of the tournament in 1991. We chatted for a few minutes and he took me to the CBS compound where I met Chuck Will, the Associate Producer. Chuck asked me a few golf related questions and told me to pick up my credentials at the Will Call office Thursday AM. I worked the International for CBS from 91 to 2002. I worked the Colonial in Ft. Worth for them a few years in the 90s and also worked the PGA Championship at Southern Hills in Tulsa in the 90s. I also worked the womens Open when it was played at the Broadmoor (Annika won) for NBC and worked the mens Senior Open for ABC when it was played at Cherry Hills and the Bear won. I did it to get inside the ropes and get an up close, behind the scenes look at how a golf tournament is televised. If you're offended by 4 letter words you need not apply. The language you hear via the headset is shall we say colorful. With todays GPS technology I'm not even sure if the networks use spotters any more.
