I just watched the Media Day interviews and it got me thinking. Chief doesn't seem like a guy looking for a HC gig. Crowton either. Both guys seem pretty damned happy at this level and in coordinator jobs. Miles basically signed on until about 2013 when he refused/didn't get the Michigan job. Hell, he could decide he's home and stay until he retires, which would be just fine by me (as long as he doesn't do the Bowden/Paterno race to the grave). So, unless the NFL pulls Chief or Crowton away, I'm not sure any team in the country has a better and more successful lineup of coaches and has more security in them staying put for awhile. Combine that with past and potential future recruiting, and nothing short of some serious legal problems will keep LSU from competing for the SEC title in earnest year in and year out - for a long time. I know this isn't a new idea. But what just hit me today was how very, very good this coaching staff is right now. Hopefully the assistants are up to snuff as well, but the top 3 plus Moffitt are just phenomenal. So, why do I feel like I have to knock on wood?
Because there are always unforeseen events. You never say never in this sport, especially when it comes to coaching moves and hires. Also, any program is just a Lester Earl away from invoking the wrath of the NCAA. But having said that, from a personnel perspective LSU is in a position other schools would die to be in, and on paper we're in extremely good shape for the foreseeable future. We're living in a golden age of LSU football. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
Crowton would take the right head coaching job again, probably. But right now he is getting very good pay for a low-stress job, compared to head coach.
Plus he is at a school that can provide him with all the skill guys he can handle so that it makes his job much easier.
I disagree that it makes it easier. Can you imagine trying to figure out what to do with Lafell, Toliver, Tolliver, Randle, Dickson, Trindon, Shep, Scott, KW, Murphy, Ford, Allen, Ridley, JJ, JLee, etc...etc...etc...???
I agree, that many ego's and talent can be difficult to manage. As a fan though, what a horrible situation to have to be in. Too much talent.
Exactly. It may be a problem, but it's a good problem. And it challenges him to create good plays to involve all of them. As for the ego thing, I don't think that's as much of a problem in college as the pros. I'm not saying these guys don't have egos, but it's easier for a coach or a team with strong leadership to keep them in check.
