First, I do like the kid allot. I just feel he is a pass specialist, and needs to be rotated with a larger DE (Brocker type). I replayed the game a couple of times to try to figure out how the lines were doing. He just plainly got man handled to many times. Keep him fresh! Let a larger DE come in and wear down the D! Then let him loose!!! IMO LSU!
I hoe the coaches work on the containment issues. On multiple occasions he rushed very wide and they very easily ran inside of him. There was no one within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage to fill the void on that side so every time it went for a big gain.
:geaux: Late in the second half, don't remember if it was the Huskies final drive or not, he got a personal foul for roughing the passer that was definitely uncalled for. He's got a history for getting personal fouls called and he definitely needs to get a handle on that. He needs to control his aggression in a more positive way. I would also like to see him rotated more with Brockers, Agayere, Edwards and Clement. Fresh DE's keeps the pressure and containment on the QB's much more efficiently. :LSU231:
I have the same concern as the first poster about Alem. Love his energy and speed in spot situations, but last season I questioned his "every down" ability. He needs to rotate with someone.
Take away 3 or 4 of those 3rd down and long plays in the first half and the game was not as close as it looked. Why is everyone so upset. They scored on the last play. We gave them 3 before the half with our timeout. that game was 31 - 13. On the road. I saw some first game things that can be fixed but i was impressed with our offense at times and we kept it pretty vanilla in our playcalling. Defense gave up some 3rd and longs against a good qb. Wow i guess anything less than a blowout and people go crazy. I am proud of our guys and know that the coaches have some improvements to make but i was pleased.
I see where you're coming from, but all of those things you mentioned did happen, and it led to us winning by one score. If we had held them to one less score, I wouldn't be concerned, but this is Washington, a team that we should have been able to go out and pound with a very simple game plan. Think back to our '07 season when we led off with Miss. St. and VT. We put up over 40 points on each and held them to a total of 7 points. That's the type of opening of a season that a National Title contender has. I hope we can play better than we did, but I didn't see a lot to get excited about outside of Toliver's play. As far as Alem goes, I agree, he's not a starter in my book right now. I think the reason he had so many sacks last season is because he came in as a pass rush specialist very fresh off of the bench.
Wasn't it Alem who committed the personal foul last year against Arkansas which gave the Razorbacks a first down (on 3rd down), which resulted in Arkansas winning the game in the final minute? If not Alem, then someone else on defense, and either way Alem and the entire defense should have learned something from giving up personal fouls!
