I love a blitzing come after them D as much as anyone, believe me! However in earlier games when Chavis did blitz it had little to no effect on getting to the QB. The only thing it did was give less defenders to defend the pass. If you blitz and get pressure, great do it early and often. Bringing the blitz so far just hasn't done the job. The 4 man pass rush is so inept that it is easy for opposing offenses to pick off our blitzing players. If you blitz but still can't get pressure you better stop because your D is about to get burned big time. Chavis simply does not have the DL players to run his D. It was a problem last year too.
I think you are right about that. Its the question of is it worth really burning redshirts, just to possibly sack the QB with the scoring defense we have right now. I think this line is build for stopping the run, although they didnt show it that much against Florida.
Corner blitz has been effective the couple of times it has been used, hasn't produced a sack but has produced a pick, and disruption.
How many times a game do you suggest bringing the corner blitz? That's really a feast or famine call, I wouldn't suggest doing it on an even semi regular basis. To be effective blitzing your front four has to be some threat. right now offenses only need 4 of their 6 to block our 4. That gives them 2 more OL and possibly a RB to pick off blitzes. Our DL has to take up more bodies to make blitzing work with any regularity. Like I said I love the blitz, I want an aggressive blitzing QB killer D like we have had in the past. But as bad as you want it you just can't turn a Yugo into a Mercedes Benz. I think Chavis is doing what he feels gives the D the best chance of being successful with the DL he has. Does it give up a lot of yards and time of possession, yes. Do I like it, no. It just appears to be the best way to go at this time. You really can't argue with the points per game numbers so it has worked, it just hasn't been overly pretty at times.
i agree with you, and a corner blitz is something i would only try maybe once a game. i was just saying that that was the only blitz that has been effective. And a wide receiver and quarterback that are on the same page will pick it up and run a quick slant or quick hit to the corner who blitzed anyway. I am ok with not putting pressure on the opposing qb as long as we are keeping the other team out of the endzone.
put peterson at safety with eugene and hawkins at cb. put 2 on their #1 wr and bring either. especially if the #1 wr is in the slot or on the short side.
