Watching NFL games on Sunday has made it very clear to me the pro-style influence to our offense. The NFL has become very pass-heavy, but it ain't just the passes to the sidelines (bama does this constantly from what I've seen). No, like the pro teams, we're going over the middle, letting our receivers make plays, forcing the defense to stay out of the box, then running effectively. Once we start tossing it to the RBs a little bit more, opposing DCs are going to lose a ton of sleep.
I love dual purpose QB's and think they're very exciting to watch but I'm so glad to see what you're speaking about in our offense. I think it will help us have wider range in who we take when recruiting. The last few years I really worried about any talented QB wanting to come play at LSU. Seemed like we were handcuffing our QB's. May have even been warranted and stats may say it may not have been as bad as I perceived but still.
I thnk the good news about Jennnings is that he is a pass first QB with a big arm, but he can hurt you with his feet secondarily. I know he had been enlisted for some run heavy mop up this year, but I hope the coaches do not pidgeonhole him as a run first guy. I think he can be a very good and elusive pocket passer for us for the next 3 years.
If he pans out the way the coaches think he could, imagine what we could do mixing a spread option with conventional schemes.
The main difference is that we are taking what the D is giving us. Something that was hidden vs. lesser teams. Once LSU hit SEC play, we averaged 287 yards a game. Bama averaged 400+... This was in games lost. The reason that is important is that for the most part, LSU was one dimensional. We haven't seen it yet b/c this is our 1st SEC game, however it is my opinion this is where everyone will see the Cam benefit to this team.
J. Hill changes this. He's taken almost 20 snaps and is averaging almost 10 ypc. If not for his transgressions, people would be saying "Gurley who?" right about now.
As I said, he has been in a run oriented mop up duty so far , so I agree, there has been no evidence yet. However, his MO coming out if high school and his spring game performance indicate he likes to stand in there and throw the ball. I guess my point is: I think he fits Cameron's schrmes, I just hope they don't try to make him into a JJ type QB.
And also the run to pass distribution was more like 270 yards rushing to only 180 yards passing in the pass several years in those early games. This year it's the opposite. THIS is what you call a balanced offense. Your ratio should be about 3:2 in terms of pass to rush yardage to be considered perfectly balanced. Not 1:1, that's a run heavy offense. And I'm speaking strictly at the collegiate level. The NFL is more like 2.5:1 ratio.
The other thing not mentioned in the stat comparisons is TD passes. Mett had just 12 all of last year, whereas he's currently at 9. Don't know how many he had through the 1st 3 games of 2012, but I doubt it was anywhere near 9.
