while the athlete has to be willing to change, the coach can not only give the opportunity, they can give guidance. if a person has not had the role model at home and someone setting clear guidelines on right from wrong, the discipline a coach can provide might make a difference. if a kid is lucky, they have that from early levels of sports if they do not have the "adult" at home. even if the player is not a problem child, a coach can set an example. for instance after k and r, miles encouraged his players to do whatever they could for the communities and people that needed help. he demonstrated that life is not completely on the football field, and that helping others was important. i'd say that is the type of role model i would want my son learning from.
