Just messing with you. I've never seen the play or the movie. When I wrote that this morning, I went looking on youtube to see if there was maybe a clip from a stage show to put with it. What I found was a performing arts school in NC recreated it about 5 years ago, trying to make it look exactly as it did on Broadway in '43. But they posted the whole show, all 3 hours of it, so no supporting video for today.

Apparently its quite a big deal as your post eludes to. I think it was a required thing for kids in school here in the past but don't know if it still is. I guess they need something to be proud of but then again, there are a lot of big name stars from here so meh

Many things happen on April 1...

On April 1, 1789,Frederick Augustus Conrad Muhlenberg of Pennsylvania is elected the first Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

On April 1, 1924, Adolph Hitler is sentenced for his role in the Beer Hall Putsch, an attempted coup by the growing Nazi Party. Despite a conviction for high treason, Hitler would spend less than a year in jail.

On April 1, 1945, 50,000 U.S. combat troops land on the southwest coast of the Japanese island of Okinawa, just 50 miles south of Kyushu, the southern main island of Japan. Its expected to be the last major campaign before a possible invasion of the Japanese home islands.

On April 1, 1918, the British military consolidates the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service into the Royal Air Force (RAF), giving the British the world's first independent air force.

On April 1, 1970, President Richard Nixon bows to the public health lobby and signs legislation officially banning cigarette ads on television and radio.

On April 1, 1984, legendary Motown artist Marvin Gaye is shot and killed by his father after a physical altercation between the two.

Interesting factoid. On Okinawa is a Japanese Peace Park. They have black or grey (cant remember) granite slabs akin to the Vietnam Memorial. On these slabs are the names of all who died on the island during the invasion. The slabs are divided up by country and names are in the language of the country they came from. As I remember they were over 100k names. You probably can see it via Google earth.
