Maybe . . . they could have been called runs. It looked like Mettenberger checked off on the last two passes when they slid 9 or 10 men into the box, exactly like he was coached. If Mettenberger had hit the wide open receiver, it would have been a first down and we'd all be celebrating a win. IF you make the call, you have to make the throw. The coaches are not throwing him under the bus, but this may be more on the QB than the OC.
Red, it very well could have been Mett checking into the pass. But wouldn't a coach tell him in that specific situation to stick to the run, do not check out of it? I just cannot wrap my head around why 2nd and 3rd down played out the way it did. To quote a friend of mine "Way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory".
To be fair, the pass on 2nd and 2 SHOULD have ended the game. Mett missed it. No excuse, it's a 5 yard out w/ a right-handed QB rolling to his right w/out any real pressure. Gotta make that throw.
