The only thing I think Miles can be blamed for is not telling RS he would be a receiver/running back hybrid right off the bat. There are a bunch of other receivers that are tearing up the NFL right now. Only problem for guys at LSU because of the simplicity of our offense is if you aren't the 1 X or the 1 Z you ain't getting the ball and you're odd man out like James Wright and Shepard. But if you are an underclassmen, your shot will come, like Dural behind Landry and Beckham, Landry behind Beckham and Randle, (Beckham was the anomaly) Johnson behind Dupre and Dural etc etc.
It's all relative to who you ask I suppose. Some will remember the great recruiter, mentor, etc.. Some will remember the quirky press conference Miles, some will remember the "Mad Hatter", and others will remember the bumbling, grass-chewing buffoon on the sidelines with the big hat. Take a look at the fans and the people you know; their opinion of him isn't likely to change in the years down the road.
Who said he's setting the world on fire? I made a comment that I felt he was under utilized why he was at LSU and part of the reason was because the offensive staff could not figure out what they wanted to do with him. It was never about talent because the fact that he's even been on a NFL roster for nearly 3 years proves he's got talent, no matter what his stats say. Making and staying on an NFL roster; especially as a role player, is not an easy task.
You could say that about a bunch of people. And some were over utilized. Shepard was on the team behind other NFL receivers at LSU so I'm not real sure he was as underutilized as you would think.
For as highly touted as he was coming out of HS, albeit a QB, he most certainly was under utilized. He was a starter, so he was good enough to be on the field with the first team. Not his fault that they couldn't figure out ways to get him the ball. I guess part of that is because, as you indicated, he was a WR and we've had issues at QB, particularly the passing game.
Think about what I said though. He was playing with other receivers that are now starters in the NFL. LSU runs an offense that only throws to the 1X and 1Z receiver.
I get it, but I don't think he was 1Y, was he? I honestly don't remember the names of the X and Z receivers when he was there. I thought Landry and OBJ were freshman when he was a senior.
Reuben Randle, Brandon LaFell for a season I think, then Reuben Randle and OBJ, then OBJ and Landry. He couldn't beat those 2 out. James Wright is also playing on an NFL team and he never saw the field except on Special Teams. It's the offense. We don't coach up quarterbacks to go through progressions and look for the 3rd and 4th guy.
