We went from having FDR on the sideline (Saban) controlling his Generals (Muschamp, Fischer et al) to having 2 field marshalls and a figure head.
i disagree with the name part. he coulda changed that as saban did since he wasnt the big name either. and I thought he was keeping things close to the vest too but he does the same with jordy on the inside lsu show when its not even a strategic or personnell question. he simply loses focus or something and its quite odd.
If he brings home the SEC championship a few times and keeps us fighting for the MNC, I won't care if he has to draw pictures to get the point across. I want a winning football coach, not TV talk show host.
People didn't expect LSU to go out & hire a national championship winning coach then though. With Miles' hire, fans honestly thought that the best coaches in the country should be begging to come to LSU & we should have gotten one of them. And Miles has changed that - it will just take a while for some fans.
First of all, let me say that is one of the most level-headed posts I have read around here in a while. I have to say some of the posts on this forum (the best forum out there no doubt) in the past season have sounded like a bunch of whining, ungrateful, panicky, ignorant blowhards. However, these are heady times for LSU football and the fanbase has yet to grow into the class act that this program now clearly deserves. I think that will improve with time. Having said that I think the same benefit of the doubt should be given Les Miles. He is obviously lacking in some areas that you have clearly pointed out. However, there must be something to his abilities as a coach as he was able to win some big games in the past and overall I would say he overachieved at OSU. Hopefully he will grow into the position and provide LSU with solid recruiting classes, relatively sound coaching schemes and make up for his other deficiencies by motivating the team to perform at a high level through his ability to inspire loyalty. From everything I can tell the players genuinely like and respect the man and the effort seems to be there energy-wise...... There are many times in life where someone gets promoted beyond there current abilities in the hope that they will become more efficient and competent as their experience grows. That will have to be the case with Miles......at least that is the good scenario. I think we are all familiar with the other options......:geauxtige
The Board of Regents or whatever, didn't want another Saban, controlling everything. They wanted someone that would follow orders, not rock the boat, and be a pawn. Thats what we got. We would not have hired SOS or any other coach that would have wanted alot of control. Edit to add: We hired another piece of coal, hoping that he was a diamond, which has yet to be seen yet.
I'm not sure I understand... What did Saban control? He got LSU to build up their facilities, which was clearly a good thing. What does Miles not control that another coach would?
Saban had alot of control over the football program and facilities. When he wanted something he got it. He basically left the Board to its own devises and ordered that LSU do this and that. Now with Miles, the Board has more power to say what goes and what doesn't. This is purely based on small talk with other fans and may just be rumor. But it sounds about right. This goes back to my argument that Miles is just a figurehead, whereas Saban was a commander. i think Miles is a good guy and a good coach, but i don't see LSU staying at the top with him at the helm.
So, you don't think the Board will maintain the football program? Is that what you're saying? Because according to you, Miles does nothing & is just a figure head. So his presence really wouldn't affect whether LSU stayed at the top or not...? I'm still not sure of control over what you are referring to.
