I would like to see some numbers on this, but I think (at least I believe) that there are billions in waste each year from people cheating the system.

There is a chit ton of loop holes in the system that need to be addressed and most stem from the chitty tax code IMO….

I would bet you are right. Billions in waste, fraud, and duplication. Nowhere near enough to have any impact on our budget issues. We need to go after the hundreds of billions that will be hard to cut, not the billions that will be easy.

Thats a chitty way to look at it. You can say that about every program as if billions don’t matter.........

It's not so much the billions that matter as much as it is getting into a process of doing things a smart and effective way all throughout the government.

Billions in each program add up quickly ALONG with cuts….

This drop in a bucket chit is for the birds…

    Billions matter…

If we chase the small stuff first we will not be cutting and reducing the deficit fast enough. We could pourthrough programs and cut 200 billion, but what is that going to matter? We would still have 1.4 trillion dollar defict to deal with. And the powers that be would be at each other's throats without really accomplishing anything.

It is far wiser to start talking about huge reforms to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and the Pentagon. We could wind up slashing 600 or 800 billion, have a sustainable budget, and mommentum to chase the stray billions to erode the deficit further.

I'm not saying that billions don't matter. I'm just saying chasing them as the starting point won't get us where we need to go, and it may even ploarize the parties even more.

They're not mutually exclusive. And creating an environment of higher efficiency would be good for the government in the long run.

I agree, but in the long run is the key term. You have to address effectiveness before you worry about efficiency, and we are rapidly approaching a point where our largest government programs cannot and will not be effective.

Military weapons development must continue. Research and development of new systems keep our tech lead far ahead of other countries. If any cuts were to take place to the military where would they come from. Servicemen and women already are paid far less than they deserve so that's not a place to cut. Noone wants the military families to lose any healthcare benifits. No medical insurance cuts to military families. Next is weapons systems. We have went from a five hundred ship navy to just above twofifty. We must have control of the seas. Fighter wings and bomber groups have shrunk in numbers also. Control of the air is vital. We have went from twenty divisions in the eighties to ten now. Our troops are streached thin. The only way to cut military spending, as I see it, is to close some of the overseas bases and force other countries to either defend themselves or put up the cash for us to defend them. It cost billions for us to have troops in japan, Germany , south Korea and other countries. If we are to defend the world then they should help us pay to do so. Where am I wrong? I'm sure there is something I'm missing.
