There have been many complaints of our play calling over the past few years (such as the short side option) but wanted to highlight something positive that usually works well. It's not really a toss sweep b/c the RB often runs between the tackles. I especially liked to see it run with Ridley a couple of years ago. I don't see it that often with other college teams. How many years have we been using it? Does the play have a specific name? Does the RB have some freedom with keeping it inside vs. outside or is it intended to follow a particular O-Lineman?
I remember reading about it during Ridley's year as the man and it was said they run it to get the ball in the back's hands early enough for HIM to make the decision on where to go. The first option is always behind the lead blocker but if the defense shoots the gap behind the lead blocker, the back has received the pitch early enough to make a cut if necessary. Amazing all that happens in a matter of seconds. I love that play and I'd imagine the line does too because whoever sets the block that springs the back free gets the glory. Balls to the walls and backs to the grass.
