Coaches are defined by championships. Just look at Saban's record at LSU. Lost at least 3 games every year but one, but won 2 SEC titles and one NC. He was a god here until he left. Bobby Bowden faced similar criticism until he finally won his NC in '93, despite his impressive win total. It's all about titles...
Miles was given a championship caliber program and will now have had two chances to win one. If he comes up short, he's in for a rough life. Top tier programs are defined by championships, with the exception of Michigan which doesn't seem to care one way or the other. Miles might be a perfect fit for them in the end.
As of right now, Miles is a good coach, but not a 'championship' coach. He could not have asked for a more favorable situation to be in regarding the BCSNCG. And he will never, ever be in one as favorable as that again. But he blew it. Now it's time to see if he's up for the challenge. Frankly, he hasn't given me any reason to believe that he will be, but I hope that I'm wrong.
While I agree this is an important game for Miles and considered a defining moment to most fans because it means he would have won in Atlanta. Is this some kind of record with Miles and all these defining games. This one I agree with but the other 20 or so, not so much.
Outside of the BCS, the bowls do not have to follow in order, the conference standings. They get to pick who they want.
Very good point. It is about titles. Look at NFL QB's as an example. One of the main things they talk about when discussing the HOF election is how many titles did they win. That is not the only area discussed but it does seem to make the good ones great and the not so good ones better.
