In my opinion, the only year the BCS got it wrong was 2003. We should have played USC, not the Sooners. But that's revisionist history. Going in to the Conference championship games OU had blown out everyone on their schedule and were a unanimous #1. The other years, I felt like the 2 best teams were playing..... Yes, even 2011.
At the time the SEC dominance wasn't so obvious. Remember the BCS NC wins were still fairly well sprinkled through the conferences and Aubie had been only adequate the year before. Finally several SE teams had been handled pretty well by SC I previous years including Aubie 23-0. I think they had an argument but that was the one year there was a top 3 parity and some one had to stay out. Chokelehoma and USCw started out 1 & 2 so there was no precedent for dropping one without a loss. That was the year that shyte happened.
Considering the outcome of the game against the Sooners, yes. And we did have wins against Auburn in 2002 and 2003. It would have been a fun game.
Alabama 3 LSU 2 and 1 appearance Florida 2 Auburn 1, 1 appearance, 1 screwjob Tennessee 1 So basically in this era of college football it's been dominated by about 5 teams Alabama LSU Florida Florida State USC LSU probably being the most consistent.
Hard to disagree but FS has a 3-5 BCS bowl record. Heck Alabama is at .500 with a 3-3 record. You left off Ohio St who has 10 appearances, more than anyone else. There are 2 categories I think. NC's and BCS bowls in general. Bama leads the pack in the former and LSU and USC lead in the latter.
Oklahoma and Ohio State were both in 3 national championship games, although they each only won 1 of them. They can't be discounted. I would put them up in the top tier of major players in the BCS era. USC's legacy is a sketchy one as the only title they won they got stripped of (duly noted in the original post btw, sorry vball). Not that they don't belong, but very hard to place them.
Grading system: BCS NC = 60 BCS NC Appearance = 20 BCS Bowl Win = 30 BCS Bowl Appearance = 10 Top 10 based on that point system (excludes forfeited games for Ohio State and USC, tiebreakers are national titles won, then national title appearances if tie is still not broken): Records indicated are NC games and then other non NC BCS Bowl games. 1. Ohio State..... 240 (1-2, 4-2) 2. Florida........... 230 (2-0, 3-2) 3. Oklahoma...... 220 (1-2, 3-3) 4. Alabama........ 210 (3-0, 0-3) 5. LSU............... 200 (2-1, 2-0) 6. FSU............... 200 (2-0, 1-5) 7. USC.............. 170 (0-1, 5-0) 8. Texas............ 140 (1-1, 2-0) 8. Miami............ 140 (1-1, 2-0) 10. Oregon........ 120 (0-1, 3-1)
There is a problem with this analysis. I think it is much better to have been in the NC, lose, and finish ranked number two, than to have won a BCS bowl against a team that is from a weak conference and was ranked out of the top ten. (So I would give 30 or 40 for the NC appearance). I will say that before the BCS, LSU was a top 20 all time program, and now LSU is a top ten all time program with a true national following and much respect. "BCS BEEN BERRY BERRY GOOD TO ME." (google that you young'ens!)
