Very interesting story in today's Advocate about the history of quarterbacks under Les Miles. It explains a lot but still doesn't account for the square peg/round hole problem. Kind of long but worth reading. http://theadvocate.com/sports/lsu/10901570-123/digging-into-the-roots-of
You'd think young quarterbacks would see that their best interests are served by going to a top school and developing his game for four or five years, not going somewhere to play right away or transfer down until they find a place they can start.
That is exactly what came to mind when I read that. Harris has actually made some comments to that effect.
I think this is what we are seeing now. It looks like the same situation all over again. Except this time, instead of throwing Jennings and Harris both to the wolves, Miles and company appear to have decided to ride it out with AJ and try and develop Harris properly without destroying his confidence. It looks like Miles is being cautious with Harris since the Auburn game. Maybe they decided to only ruin one guy instead of both of them. From the article... "LSU’s situation reminds Crowton of 2008 in that the Tigers are being forced to play quarterbacks who are not developed enough. “You really need to develop in that position,” he said. Crowton thought he had that in 2008. Perrilloux was a three-year player, having redshirted in 2005. He was dismissed from the team in May, three months before fall camp began. “It was a late dismissal,” Crowton said. “There was nobody left out there. All of the good ones went other places. We ended up having to start Jarrett Lee as a redshirt freshman. “He would have been much better had he developed,” Crowton said, referencing the blows to Lee’s confidence with all of the interceptions returned for touchdowns (seven). “I can see that with Jennings,” he said. “There are some things that happened there that weakened that position. Not recruiting circumstances.” Jennings is a second-year guy like Lee was. And Jefferson, who assumed the role late that season, was a true freshman like Harris."
All that may be true, but if we know the problem it seems like we should be able to fix it. Considering we have been through this before we should know how to navigate these waters. I like the idea of a JUCO coming in that Cam can work with then our recruits could be groomed. If we are going to gamble on one and dones we better be looking for some Cam Newtons and famous jamis type guys. I still think we need to go out of state and find some capable drop back passers or go to a spread for these QB's we are getting. I go to the high school championships every year with my son and I don't see to many LA high schools with drop back pro style qbs. All run some version of spread or option to run or throw.
That's what I was thinking. I said in another post that as long as Jennings could keep us above water they could groom Harris behind the scenes.
