I was at my daughters school (lower school) yesterday for a 'Dad Day' program and we went through their normal morning rituals first. Which included the entire lower school. Rituals included prayer, story telling, updates, singing (etc), and the Pledge. But the Pledge was in Spanish. I know they teach foreign language in the lower school but I couldn't help but feel uneasy about this. Maybe it was just the day for the Spanish teacher to lead this morning? I'm just not quite sure what I think about this...
A friend of mine is French, his wife speaks Spanish. When at home, he speaks to his kids in French, at home the wife speaks in Spanish. Outside the home, they all speak English. Trilingual kids, smart move on their part.
Prayer and the pledge are both terrible and the school should be burned to the ground. It's good to learn Spanish though.
Let me see if I can remember this from jr. high (I will not use the internet and cheat): Juro fidelidad a la bandera de los Ustados Unitos de America y a la republica que representa uno nacion bajo dios indivisible con libertad y justicia para todos
thats cool. anyways, all parents should aspire to raise bilingual children, spanish or chinese obviously being the most useful options.
My twin bro lives in San Diego. Married a Costa Rican that he met when he lived in Costa Rica. They've been married for 10 or 12 years and have 2 beautiful boys. My nephews are bi-lingual. In Mississippi, they were ridiculed in school (not badly, but ridiculed none the less). In San Diego, they are not. Also, his wife is a nurse. Sweetest most kind-hearted sould that I've ever met. Doctors here were mean to her and complained that she should 'learn English'. Clearly, she went through nursing school here so she has a great command of the English language, but she does have an accent. She would come home crying because these redneck doctors gave her such a hard time. In San Diego, she makes triple the money (literally) and she's been promoted twice. They do not treat her differently b/c of her accent and the fact that she's bi-lingual actually helped her get her job in San Diego.
Rex why do you feel uneasy? Hate learning? Want to make sure your kids are as provincial as possible?
