    Pellini's defense is not deceptive.

Nick's defenses were very confusing with a lot of shifting and dozens of fake looks. This defense just lines up guys in the same postions and lets a good quarterback pick them apart. Fortunately we won't see many more quarterbacks as good that one.

But "that one" had ONLY started 3 games in his career! Saban would have been blitzing, and stunting, and really messing with Keller's head. Pelini decided to allow this youngster to have a free lesson on how to shread a "once powerful defense"...

Let's face it, the LSU secondary does not and will not understand the concepts of zone coverage. Ever since Lou Tepper was here they haven't understood and even under Saban they did not understand it. The few times we played zone coverage under Saban (see Arkansas '02) we give up big plays. For some reason if our guys have to think about defending an area of the field and react they are terrible. We need to say somebody pick a player to cover and the rest rush the QB. Our guys need to attack and this passive defense does not work for these guys. I think that Pelini believes in the bend don't break theory, however we played the bend and break defense. This was eerily reminiscent of the '98 defense. I hope he can come up with a better plan and make better adjustments. I did not see any adjustments last night. But I will not vote to send him back to OU yet, I will wait to see what happens the following three games. By the fifth game of the season all kinks should be worked out and no more excuses.

This disturbs me. I won't judge a coach by one game, especially an opener on the road against a ranked opponent. Let's see if he fixes the problem before the 24th.

Exactly. That's the point. Last I checked, the sky is still there and isn't falling. Maybe he's not a good coordinator, maybe he is. We just don't know at this point.

I don't think anyone is going to write this coaching staff off after just one game. Most of the talk is just fans venting frustration over the shock of the way the defense performed. However with the talent and experience we have on defense I think absolutely every single LSU fan on the earth was shocked and horrified at the way the pass defense looked and the lack of adjustments on the defensive side. I expected some growing pains with a new staff, scheme and aftermath of Katrina but never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see such a putrid performance and lack of adjustments given the talent of the team and resume of this staff. I would expect fans to continue to vent about their shock and dismay until the defensive coaching staff shows last night was a fluke.JMO

AMEN!!!!!!! that fact itself was by far the most alarming and shocking thing I saw last night. My wife kept screaming for them to do something anything to get some pressure on the QB, obviously Pellini couldn't hear her.

Unlike the offense, this is a new defense this year. Perhaps it hasn't completely solidified yet, but it has to be in two weeks. I understand that maybe not everything in the defensive playbook was used in game one, but we can't have another "it takes three years to fully implement my system", Lou Tepper-style defense.

Yes, it's the first game & we shouldn't call for his head yet, but come on...

Last night had better not be an indicator of what's to come, but I think we all realize that there's a good chance it is.

I was really excited about Pellini & thought he would be great, but it's not looking like he can live up to his resume at this point.

What worries me about the future is not just Pellini making bad calls, but Miles keeping him. Miles is an offensive guy who wants to score more points than the other team & isn't going to pay too much attention to the defense. If Pellini coaches the rest of the season like he coached last night, he needs to be let go & we're going to need Miles to recognize that.

Also, what were all those reports of the defense being ahead of our offense through out the off season??? That worries me about our offense, but yet gives me hope that this was a fluke for defense at the same time.

One last thing, I know it looked ugly last night but we only gave up 31 points to a top 15 team on the road, with one of the best offenses in the country. It isn't as bad as it seems right now.
