1) The blitzes are not well disguised and every one knows exactly who is blitzing. 2) The blitzes are not well timed by either the blitzer or by the playcaller. Sometimes blitzes are called on poor down and distance situation and puts the weak DBs in position to not be able to cover and due to problem number 1 3) Confusion - sometimes either the personnel packages are messed up or there are players running around out of position not knowing where they should be. 4) LBs covering players with more speed and athleticism ala Percy Harvin being covered by Darry Beckwith 5) DBs/LBs always look like they are jumping routes which means poor preparation 6) Safeties consistently out of position 7) Alot of the times it looks like we run base defenses all the time especially with the lineman. - If these players can not win one on one matchups then we need to do something different like line stunts and twists. 8) And I forgot to add DBs playing 10 yds off the ball when all that is needed for a first down is 6/7 yards
Yeah, I think most of this is fairly spot on. Specifically, what is affecting our aggressiveness, as I see it, is that the DBs do not seem to be versed well on playing up and close with receivers thus allowing them to get open quickly. The quick routes mean a quick QB release and not enough time for pressure to get to him beforehand. Obviously, this was a strength of coaching for, dare I say it, Saban. That style of DBs manning up and covering receivers long enough allows an aggressive front pursuit, and that is the biggest shortfall of this staff, IMO- and I don't think this has to do with quality of players or their abilities. Additionally, it seems that against UGA and Troy, we did not have an overall good gameplan in the first half. I would say in game adjustments have been a strength overall for this staff, however.
I wonder if LM rotates the CO-DC's like he does the QB's. If so he should fire whovever coached the 1st half vs Troy and keep whoever coached the 2nd half. :geaux:
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know of other co-defensive coordinator scenarios at other major schools, past or present? For those that may have existed in the past, were they successful? Clearly we know that the current situation is not working... :geauxtige
Well you can look here... http://tulsahurricane.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/030107aaa.html I guess Tulsa has co-coordinators on defense, and they just gave up 70 to Houston. Here's another: http://drake.scout.com/a.z?s=458&p=2&c=488613
