Has CLM found his new run first QB in Penn State's Rob Bolden? I am shocked that LSU (or any major program) would want him. 2010 stats: 39% completion percentage. 2 TD. 7 INT.
LSU Football: Penn State QB Rob Bolden Would Be a Good Addition to the Tigers WHY ??? Former Penn State QB Rob Bolden Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesIt's open season for poaching Penn State players and recruits, and apparently, Les Miles and Co. have their eyes on quarterback Rob Bolden.According to Jim Kleinpeter of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, LSU hosted Bolden over the weekend and is considering adding him to the roster. Due to the NCAA sanctions recently handed down to Penn State, Bolden is eligible to transfer and play immediately. The Altoona(Pa.) Mirror reported Sunday that Bolden had been granted a release even prior to the sanctions being handed down and was removed from the roster on Sunday. He would be a great fit for LSU.Tiger fans and Tiger critics will undoubtedly see Bolden's career stat line—165-for-328 (50.3%) for 2,045 yards, seven touchdowns and 14 interceptions—and cringe. Very Jordan Jefferson-like.But those aren't the stats that should jump out to LSU.The only one that matters is "20," as in 20 games played.Zach Mettenberger is the unquestioned starting quarterback at LSU in 2012, but behind him, there's a whole lot of inexperience. As in "no experience."The only other quarterbacks on LSU's roster are freshmen Stephen Rivers and Jerrard Randall. Freshman signee Jeremy Liggins signed with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College as he tries to get his grades in order.Bolden was a 4-star recruit in the class of 2010, according to Scout.com, and while his on-the-field results haven't been great, his combination of experience and skills make him a viable backup if he's willing to accept the role. The thought of Bolden being a Tiger will probably make Tiger fans wary, but if he and LSU decide to get together, he would serve as a solid insurance policy behind Mettenberger.
Not particularly a fan of the late Paul Harvey, but I have to quote him here...." and now the REST of the story." I found it incredibly odd you quoted 2010 stats when the guy played a heck of a lot if not more in 2011. So let's put the 2011 stats out that shall we. 58% completion mark and 5 TDs, 7 INTs. Doubt these numbers will get him into the College Football Hall of Fame but remarkably better than his FR stats. I will still also say that he had a heck of a lot better games against Alabama than LSU QBs in the 2 games they played against Alabama. He also played Alabama twice and his passing yardage and % completion would have made Jefferson or Lee green with envy...still not good, but certainly better that they did against the same defense. And Penn State didn't have the offensive weapons that LSU had either so more fell on him. BTW, Pennsylvania, I'm surprised you did not mention that 2010 were as a TR FR...the guy didn't even redshirt. That is not a trivial little detail.
He would be a good pickup for LSU. He would give experience to an otherwise 0 experience backup QB position and since he had a much better SO than FR season (BTW, what wasnt mentioned is that he PLAYED his TR FR season...what a shocker the stats weren't great. He was the first TR FR QB to start at Penn State in 100 years. His % completion his TR FR season was 39....his % completion his TR SO season was 58%, which is not bad at all. He still had a couple more INTs than TDs in his SO season.
my guess is there is a problem with Rivers and/or Randall. maybe one or both of them is looking really bad at QB so far, maybe one or both of them have told the coaches they will transfer if they aren't named the #1 QB when Mett leaves, maybe the coaches or Randall himself think he will be more valuable at another position, etc for example, let's say Rivers is looking good to be our starter in 2014, but we are worried about having a decent back-up QB for Rivers in 2014 because Randall will have switched positions by then, transferred by then, or just won't have what it takes to be a decent back-up to Rivers by then so we bring in Bolden, redshirt him this season (2012), continue to groom him as the back-up to Mett and Rivers in 2013, and then have him ready to go as a quality 5th year senior back-up QB to redshirt junior Rivers in 2014 according to LSU recruiting expert Michael Scarborough, LSU has been showing interest in Bolden for months, and that whole time we planned on him sitting out 2012 because you have to sit out a year when transferring to another Div 1 school (of course, now that the NCAA has decided to slam Penn State with sanctions, they waived the one year transfer rule for Penn State players) being that we were expecting him to sit out 2012 for the months we've been interested in him, it makes sense that we want to redshirt him in 2012 (unless Bolden only agreed to come here if we promised not to redshirt him, which if that's the case, I think he'd be dumb not to want to redshirt) of course, if there is a problem with both Rivers and Randall, we could be bringing in Bolden because we think he's at least as good as they are or better and finally, maybe we're pleased with both Rivers and Randall but we are impressed enough with Bolden's upside that we want to see what he develops into with another 1 to 2 years of training under his belt
Your initial guess about their performances I believe is correct. My guess is Randall ends up at WR or transfers. Rivers supposedly was ahead of his brother Philip out of HS in development but of course Philip really blossomed at NC State. I don't think there has been any ultimatum by either Rivers or Randall however. I do not think Bolden would be redshirted. I think Bolden would come to LSU as the backup to Mettenberger in 2012 and compete for the starting job mainly vs Rivers in 2013. If Randall moves to another position, he wouldn't be at QB and and of course Rettig and Jennings would be TR FR. Once again, I want to emphasize that the original post in this thread was truthful but left out important info. First, his stats were correct for 2010 but Pennsylvania failed to mention that Bolden was thrown into the fray as a TRUE FRESHMAN! Also, his stats for 2011 are not that bad...58% completion and close to a 1 to 1 TD to INT ratio (of course it should be 2 to 1 but that is another story). I disagree with you about Bolden being dumb not to want to RS. He could be a backup this year and if something happens to Mettenberger move right in as the starter. Then if he does well this season, he probably IS the starter for 2013.
about a month ago in his 2012 football preview, Pete Fiutak of Scout.com/CollegeFootballNews.com wrote this about Bolden: "Can (true junior) Robert Bolden finally turn his tools into production? It’s all there with 6-3, 214-pound size, decent mobility and a terrific arm" that doesn't make him sound like a run-first QB also, Bolden only ran for 38 yards in the ten games he played in last season (1.3 yards per carry). the season before that he had negative 11 yards rushing (negative .037 ypc) in ten games played. that doesn't make him sound like a run-first QB either
