Outside of the final drive the DL clearly won the line of scrimmage battle against an excellent UGA OL. The pass rush isnt like years past but its good enough. Also thats why Id like to see Peterson on an island, it gives an extra guy to blitz on passing downs. When UGA first scored it was an 18 play, 60+ yard drive. I can live with that. Its the final drive that was bad, but overall the DL played a hell of a game. You are just use to seeing a super dominant DL, which this isnt. Its a good line thats improving each game. What a reversal, Im normally criticizing and your normally the complimentary one!:yelwink2:
He threw them too late some of the time, too. If he can find the "sweet spot" of when to throw it, he'll be alright.
Yesterday, it seemed part of the problem with the O-line was how long JJ was holding on to the ball. Having said that, I would rather him hold on to the ball and take a sack then to rush the throw and it be intercepted. His mechanics also need improve a bit when he drops back for longer throws by shortening his throwing motion - he seems to loping with his delivery. Agree with others that he is better when rolling out, and quick play action passes. They need to abandon the option altogether, IMHO. All in all though, we are 5-0 like Legacy says, and that is the most telling "stat". I also like that we are positive in turnover margin - that is an extremely important one, too, and usually goes hand in hand with overall record!
#12 in the SEC in sacks. Dead last. #11 in the SEC in tackles behind the line. Do you honestly believe that is good enough for a top-5 team? I do not, sir. The line is playing the run adequately, but they are failing to pressure the passer. I'm not sure why, because we seem to have the size, strength, and talent to do so. Top passers cannot be allowed to have all the time that they want to get the ball away.
While I agree JJ magnifies the problem by sometimes holding on too long. PLus his long throwing motion must improve. That said, I still put it on the OL. More times than not they dont consistently hold blocks long on pass plays. To give the receivers time to break open down the field. Also you have to eventually establish the run to help open the pass. We cant do that right now. They both work off each other. Unless we go to a more pure spread, run and shoot style pass. Eventually LSU will have to run the ball to beat teams like UF and Bama.
Agree, and they did that yesterday. Weren't as great as we have been in the past, but better than our prior 4 games this year. Our running stats, if you minus the sacks, were pretty good, especially considering the opponent. UGAs strength on defense was against the run supposedly.
Agree with this And this....the tackles behind the line is a very telling stat to me. We do a great job of getting to the ball carrier behind the line, but our tackling technique is very poor, and the runner usually ends up squirming free and falling back to the line of scrimmage instead of what should have been a 3 yard loss. For us to win any of our remaining conference games, both interior lines are going to have to do much better in the second half of the season.
I do agree we need a better pass rush. The run part is good, but we do have to get to the QB more. I think with the LBs and DBs suring up we can see more blitzes. Which is a big part of what helped the DLs in the past. We blitzed the hell out of teams because our CBs were so good. I love an attacking D. You get burned but overall I rather it.
This game was the first game that I actually felt like we could be a good team. Everything went against us but we outplayed GA so bad that we were still able to pull off the victory.
