I have seen six different species of snake in my yard. I have seen garter snake, a speckled king snake, a cotton mouth (dead), a rat snake, a blue runner (some people call em blue racers), and an earth snake. The earth snake was pretty neat. I was digging for worms to feed my turtle, and I actually thought the snake was a worm. When I picked ut up it wasn't slimey. That is when I noticed the tiny eyes and mouth. I looked it up in my field guide, and learned that they are rarely seen because they mainly stay underground, so I felt lucky to get to handle the little guy. `
Cool. I had a run in with a water mocassin (cotton mouth) in my back yard. Them sumbitches are f'in evil.
I've caught a speckeled king and garter snake in the yard. I've seen a lot of other snakes ... copperhead, rat snake, etc. (we live near the rural life museum). Last fall we had a moccasin in the garage holed up in a corner. I shot it with a 22. Missed its head and hit it's belly. Out popped a bunch of little snakes. The thing was looking for a place to give birth.
They were too immature to live. They all died right next to mom. The place stunk for a few days. Had to lysol it down a few times.
