    Hey,

I'm looking for some information about the two kickers we signed, Andrew Crutchfield and Josh Jasper, for a future blog post I'll be making. In particular, I'm looking for info on:
    • which is expected to punt and which is expected to kick
    • any connections to LSU
    • how they came to our attention

I run a feature profiling LSU recruits and these are two I need more information on. Thanks.

I hope I dont have this backwards. Crutchfield has a stronger leg for FGs and Kickoffs. I forget his stats on touchbacks but it very good. Jasper would be the Punter. I dont think they have any past connections to LSU. I found most of their stats awhile back from kicking camps before they signed with LSU.

Crutchfield and Jasper were rated #3 and #9 respectively and both were 3* kickers – there were only 13 with a 3 star rating, quite a few with 2, and the majority had no “Star rating”. Not sure how Peveto learned of them.

It was my understanding that, Patrick Fisher and Brady Dalfrey were going to be competing for the spot during spring practice. Fisher has kicked six times for a 39.7 average in the past, but he had no attempts last year. In three years at LSU, Dalfrey has never punted in a game. As it turned out, Dalfrey had some “Academic issues” but could be back with the team in fall.

So fifth-year senior, Patrick Fisher, will be our punter, he averaged over 43 yards on 5 punts and one 56 yarder in the spring game.

Supposedly, Jasper was to enter the picture if neither was impressive. I saw him, on his highlight vids, nail a 49 yarder and put some kickoffs out of the back of the endzone. Crutchfield's highlights were pretty impressive too- can kick it 60+ yards off the tee.

Thanks homies. I knew the basics like star ratings and places of origin. I just needed some depth. This particular post is going to be about the wisdom of giving scholarships to kickers, punters, and other specialists. My thesis: if the specialist is really good at his specialty and if you have a legitimate need for it, it is a good idea to give him a scholarship.

Having a good kicker is like having a good teacher, coach, etc. You don't realize it unless they're not good.......taken for granted.

I was telling some guys the other day, if I had a son, and wanted him to get a football scholarship, I'd make him a kicker. Plenty of opportunities to "Be in the spotlight" like many parents long for, yet, life after college- no aches, pains, when he's old.

On the flip, a catcher in baseball. Only one per team, infielders are plentiful- by comparison. Pitchers........well, they can't hit.

Potted Plant, when you finish with it, pm me a link if it's okay, I'd like to read it. :thumb:

I'd say deep snapper. It's a skill that very few people take time to develop, but is crucial to the game.

Here are some of their stats from their senior year if that helps.

    From DandyDon

Andrew Crutchfield*, Concord, North Carolina. Made 5 of 9 field goal attempts in 2005 and 39 of 42 PATs and averaged 36.5 yards per punt as a junior.

Josh Jasper*, K, 6'0", 170, Memphis ,Tennessee, Ridgeway High School. Was recruited by Tennessee, Louisville, Memphis, Ole Miss, Auburn and Alabama. Selected 5A All-State kicker as a junior in 2005. Made 17 of 21 field goals and 53 of 57 extra points in 2005.

There was a kicking camp, Chris Sailer Kicking, that both of them competed in. Here are links to their profiles from then.

Here's what one website says about them.

Crutchfield will compete for kickoffs & punts, while Jasper will compete for FG's & Extra Points, I believe. Both were highly regarded and either/both could become starters by some point this season.

    I'd never thought of that.

    Won't be on many/any headlines though. :)

I agree. Long snappers have a unique skill and typically avoid serious injury. This player participated in USC's lineman camp as a DT AND long snapper. And yes, it's a girl and she stayed longer than anyone and made zero complaints.
