On the pass by Maze, inexplicably the slot receiver lined up on the left side of the field runs a crossing route and nearly runs up the back of the TE running a streak to the endzone. Reid's assignment on this play is to have one on one coverage with the slot receiver, and fortunately his awareness and instincts told him the TE was the intended receiver so he aborted his assignment and rushed back to cover the TE. The rest is history. Good God, that was a fatal flaw in the design of that trick play. Brandon Taylor was responsible for anything deep on that play and he reacted a little too late and would not have been able to affect the pass. He actually got sucked into the fake reverse going away from the TE's side.
All the more impressive that we only had 10 guys on the field for that play. There are some pictures on droppings that show as much.
There was nobody to pick on that play. The slot receiver moved Reid right into the play unknowingly. Taylor bit to the right and recovered too late when he saw the TE running out in pattern. You don't pick from one side of the field to the other. The slot receiver would have had to be on the same side of the field as the TE.
I just watched the video on youtube and there are definitely 11 players. We're playing nickel with 4 down lineman and 2 LBs. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEpFMr5X_Wo]Lsu vs Alabama 2011 - YouTube[/ame]
That's what i get for perusing droppings. From what I recall of the still shots it probably didn't pan in enough to include Clairborne.
The TE got off slow because of all of the traffic with the blitzers on the right. If not for that he's past the spot where they almost meet before the slot guy gets there.
