The thing that keeps coming back to me with respect to Tressel's resignation are the parallels between Terrell Pryor and Ryan Perrilloux and the 2 different ways in which Miles and Tressel handled the situations. One led to a bad season and a very disgruntled fan base, but saved the university from any potential investigations and sanctions by nipping the problem in the bud. The other led to a great season, a shot at a BCS title, but ultimately triggered an NCAA investigation with harsh sanctions most likely to come, exposed a fetid football program at a storied university, and led to the HC losing his job.
we didnt really nip the problem in the bud. we were perilously close to letting perrilloux set this program back even further than he did bc we catered to him. let him run amok for quite some time. why? bc he was a necessity. in fact, hes directly related to the issues we currently have at qb. So credit miles for finally getting rid of the cancer that was RP but it should have been a lot sooner. We sacrificed these current years with below average qb play to win a NC with RP who was pretty instrumental in the UT game in Atlanta. Kids like Pryor/Perrilloux can single-handedly destroy programs even as large and successful as OSU and LSU. Sweater-vest should have pulled the plug long ago on Pryor. Some would say we should have never let RP step foot on this campus, either. And they're probably right. these really bad apples just arent worth it.
Keeping in mind that RP was Miles first class after being on the job a very short time its worth asking these questions Would Miles have offered RP if he could have gotten to know him better. If he had the usual recruiting process to learn everything he needed to know. At the time I was pretty impressed that he beat out Mack Brown for RP. Would Miles offer RP today? Once he had him in the program his only choice was to try to turn him around.
IMO Les should have known what he had with Perrilloux the second he started running his mouth about winning 4 Heismans. By the time Les finally woke up to reality he found himself with no viable backups and all his QB eggs in Perrilloux's basket. I don't blame Les for us being "stuck" with Perrilloux. Not all character judgment calls work out. What I do blame Les for is not having the foresight to recruit solid, dependable backups for insurance after the initial red flags were raised (counterfeit $20, sneaking onto riverboat casinos, etc.), understanding that we weren't going to land another 5* recruit while he was still on the team.
:geaux: Thought I remembered reading something on the Forum that Jimbo Fisher tried to warn Les about recruiting Perriloux when he got the job. Supposedly Satan (sorry, meant Saban :hihi wasn't even recruiting him due to character issues and Jimbo told Les about it. Somebody else remember any of that? :LSU231:
that is the rumor what is the fact of the issue? Les messed up on RP but I think he has the ship in good shape. You really want to talk about RP with the team we have going on the field this year ?
Based on what I heard from coaches at ESJ is that RP didn't like the idea of playing for Saban. Saban was making inroads before he left though.
Maybe because he knew he couldn't get away with his antics under Saban, whereas Miles probably came across as a little softer (who doesn't when compared to NS?). That worked out great for him.
