Just back from hunting camp ( no L.S.U. football ), catching up on ESPN, Corso and herbstool bleeding from the mouth about their fantasy playoff... and just as I expected ... No Respect for L.S.U... In their dream, they' ve got UUUSSSuCCC and Oklahoma in their Championship game. They are already trying to persuade voters to give UUUSSSuCCC a "share" of the TITLE. :geaux:
IMO the sooners deserve it over tOSU. Just me though. The bmy- ratings give alot more weight to SOS and quality wins.
This is my opinion: At the beginning of this season, I would have told you that these were the most stacked teams this year, in alphabetical order: Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, USC. Because all of these teams play in major conferences, had any of these teams finished with the best record this year, I would have had no doubt that they were a legit national champion contender in the NC game. Of those 9 teams: --One team (Ohio State) finished with only one loss, the only team in college to do so besides 11-1 Kansas. --Four teams (Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, USC) finished with only two losses, the only teams in college football to do so besides 11-2 VT, 10-2 BYU, 10-2 Boise State, 11-2 Mizzou, 10-2 WVU, 10-2 ASU. So to me, there is no doubt that Ohio State is THE legit #1 team in the NC game. The only real issue to consider was: "Who should be the #2 team that gets the chance to play #1 Ohio State for the title?" It should have gone to Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, or USC. Georgia didn't win their own conference, so that would be lame to let them play #1 Ohio State for the championship. That left LSU, Oklahoma, and USC. LSU had more quality wins that Oklahoma or USC. LSU beat Florida and Tennessee. Oklahoma beat Texas. USC didn't beat any major powerhouse this year. You could also look at the 2nd-tier powerhouses that they played. LSU had VT, Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama, and South Carolina. I doubt that USC or Oklahoma beat as many 2nd-tier powerhouses. As for their losses, LSU's losses weren't as bad as the losses that Oklahoma and USC had. LSU lost to 7-5 Kentucky and 8-4 Arkansas. Oklahoma lost to 6-6 Colorado and 8-4 Texas Tech. USC lost to 4-8 Stanford and 8-4 Oregon. In other words, LSU is the only team that lost to teams that had winning records. Neither Colorado or Stanford was ranked at any time this year. Kentucky spent 8 weeks in the Top 25 (and they were already in the Top 25 when they beat LSU). In addition, Kentucky actually has some superstars on their team this year. Who does Colorado or Stanford have? Point is, it seemed pretty obvious to me that Ohio State would be #1 and LSU would be #2. When I found out the the AP, Coaches, and Harris poll all agreed with me, I wasn't surprised at all.
While Virginia Tech might generally be considered a 2nd-tier powerhouse, their ranking at the end of this year & our demolishment of them was a huge boost to our NC resume.
Oklahoma beat the current #6 team twice. Texas finishing the season at #19. 3 quality wins in my eyes > 1 quality wins by the buckeyes. I should clarify and say I think oklahoma is the better team. With the current system in place the buckeyes should be and are #1. I'll be unhappy until strength of schedule is given more weight in the computer formulas. Not tons more.. but at least a significant amount.
You say Oklahoma is better than Ohio State, what about USC? Oklahoma lost to Colorado, a 23-point underdog. That's what ruined their shot at the NC. Same with USC losing to Stanford. Even had the Colorado and Stanford losses been the only losses for Oklahoma and USC this year the Buckeyes probably still should have got the #1 nod since their only loss was to a 9-3 team that is going to the Rose Bowl. But the reality is, those humiliating losses that OU and USC had weren't their only loss of the season. There is no doubt Ohio State should be ahead of them. In addition, the Buckeyes play in the Big Ten, which is a better conference than the Big 12 or Pac 10. You can talk about quality wins, but the Big Ten is a better quality conference than the Big 12 or Pac-10.
Losing to stanford automatically disqualified USC IMO. I do say that oklahoma is a better team than ohio state. It's been a crazy season.. and ohio state being idle for so long did naught but help them. If they had played a CCG (and won) I would definitely give them the go-ahead. Yeah, Ohio st. had 1 loss. They also played 1 less game than the rest of the contending teams. Their one quality win was against a so-so michigan team who looks to end the 8-5. If they were 12-1 they would absolutely deserve the game. 11-2 they would have no shot. I guess it all comes down to me believing CCG should be mandatory.
I feel that. The Pac 10 does a round rover thing where every team in the conference has to play each other. Other conferences have Conference Championship Games (CCGs). I do think that it is sad that the Big Ten does neither.
