Agreed. It got better tonight. Although we must temper that with the fact we were playing MSU, not an offensive juggernaut. Certainly not cited as a passing team. But you know that. I'm going to buy into the 2nd half, even as ugly as it was for the defense, but at least we made stops and got a couple of turnovers. I hope it pushes us in the right direction. Because Florida's defense is good enough to hold us to 24-31 points. We must be careful with this new QB they have who is gaining more and more confidence for them.
The tackling must improve. There is no leg drive or wrapping up. We desperately need some young kids to step up on the DL. In recent years LSU rotated numerous players along the DL.
This is what @tirk and I were discussing the other day. LSU for the last couple years had a DL that was 2 deep with NFL talent. Now they have a total of 2 players on the DL that have a chance to play on Sunday. What the hell happened? DB's are young so I won't crush their nuts yet but the they should have more developed talent on the DL.
I'll join others in saying that the tackling is pretty poor. You can't just throw a shoulder into the ball carrier and expect him to dissolve into dust. Our boys have to start wrapping up.
The poor DL play exacerbates the weak LB play. Our LB get eaten up by blockers, and our DL can't occupy the OL enough to keep them from reaching the LBs on run plays. Of course, if we had someone in the middle to crack heads, that might look a bit different. Welter is just overmatched physically. I refuse to believe that the far faster and more athletic Debo Jones is not a better option at OLB than Barrow.
This is true, but in fairness, he was asked to guard their slot receiver Lewis in man coverage on more than one occasion. That's not fair to Barrow, as Lewis is quicker and faster. I'm not a Barrow apologist, as he has struggled this year, but asking him to do this is not putting him in the best position to succeed. That dude is head and shoulders better than Driscoll. Their offense is a lot smoother now. Makes you wonder why he wasn't starting before Driscoll got hurt.
The defense started coming together a bit more in the 2nd half, maybe the lights are starting to come on and the game starting to slow a little for them. I think we're started seeing a defense finally gel together and they will begin getting better each week.
