GOOD >Offense >Terrence McGee - very nice second option - perhaps he benefited from a tired D, but he's benefited for multiple weeks, so it is McGee or the coaches doing something right >Heard the radio talking about play another WR instead of FB... I like what's happening with the FBs so far. BAD >Defense still has work to do, but looked better against a weaker team. Not confident in our Ds ability to stop 3rd&1 or 4th&in. >OL/running game is shaky on short distance pickups. We can't count on picking up 3rd&1 or 4th&in. >Blue/Hilliard - running straight FW with little vision UGLY >Punting game is rough. >Is Jennings our #2 QB? Has he really gotten enough play time? This is why we struggled with Lee/Jefferson - mismanagement of QB development.
Two things: First of all, last night was the only time we've had massive penalties (but it was an SEC crew, and they are notorious for over-calling of penalties.) Prior to last night, we were one of the least penalized teams in the SEC, which is a big improvement. If it makes you feel better, Bama had an inordinate number of penalties yesterday. Secondly, we did have to kick a FG, instead of a TD on one penalty last night. Otherwise, what drives have been killed from penalties? This looks like a copy and paste from last year. We're scoring at will right now.
Agree on most everything Red posted. The defense is coming along but they are young and still playing a step slow because they probably have yet to entirely grasp the scheme. Some of the veterans aren't stepping up which hasn't helped much on defense either. Offensively, I think we can hang forty or better on anybody right now. This is the best Tiger offense I've seen since in a long, long time and it's damn fun to watch. With Hill being back to full strength it will truly be Pick Your Poison. Punting sucks.....need to get Keehn straightened out or let Hairston or one of the other guys have a shot at it. Not saying that they have to be Brad Wing, but we need someone to punt the ball more than 40 yards.
3rd and 3 - we got 2 yards (I still say we got the first down, poor spot...this was the series we were gonna go for it at the 1 1/2 yard line, and we easily made it on 4th but had a false start) 2nd and 2 - we ran for 9 yards 1st and goal from the 2 - we got 1 yard 2nd and 1 - we ran for 8 yards 3rd and 1 - we ran for 3 yards I would not have listed that under "BAD".
I was alluding more to the TCU game as far as drive killing penalties. That game should have been a route. Last night had that one, but its improved. I also was refering to a big play or two that was taken back. Thankfully LSU managed to score TDs to Landry right after on both plays. I totally agree though, for the most part LSU is scoring at will. Its a different experience having a high powered O, rather than a dominant D.
I checked out a couple of Auburn boards today and a lot of those guys have been paying attention to LSU. A couple of comments stand out in my mind. One is that the LSU offense is already at mid-season form, and I have to agree. Cameron has already addressed the two biggest issues from last year . . . Predictable play calling and inconsistency at quarterback. The other comment is that the defense is a substantial drop-off from last year . . . And I have to agree. I expected it to take a while for a young defense to gel and that is increasingly obvious.
I have to agree with all your listed points Red. It will be interesting to see what happens when the level of competition increases. OL still not getting a great push run blocking and even with the blitzing you mentioned the Kent QB had time to throw. Also need a 3rd WR to step up. Young LBs and DBs don't look ready to play a good offensive team yet but they should improve. They better, gawga coming up soon. Can't say enough about what Cam has done for the offense. LSU doesn't look like the same team on that side of the ball. Very unpredictable, balanced and efficient. If the OL gels, a young WR steps up and the TE/RBs get involved in the passing game it could be the offense Tiger fans have been dreaming of for years.
He looks alot bigger this year, almost like a tight end, he had some big catches last season, namely the diving stab that ended up being the difference in the A&M game. I'd like to see them get Magee and Hill more involved in the passing game, both have big play capability.
