Miami and FSU have nothing to do with G. Tech last year. By that logic, you could say the SEC doesn't have any defenses. Look at the Georgia vs. South Carolina final, 41 - 37. Neither of those teams had any offense the week before when they played non-SEC teams. Then they match up with an SEC team and go crazy with points. The SEC does have better defenses, but you can't generalize all the time. We just faced one of the tougher defenses out there and did pretty good in bad conditions. JJ has played fine with what has been called and hasn't had any major mistakes. He has also run well. They called way too many designed screens last game and the blocking was not there so we kept losing yards. That needs to be fixed and different calls need to be made when it obviously isn't working. We don't even really need deep balls because we have such athletic guys. We just need to start throwing 10-15 yard passes to get the whole D off of the line. We didn't do much of that Saturday, but Vandy still didn't really stop our running game. He has the arm to throw deep balls and I'd like to see a couple of attempts each game, but the question is whether the line will give him the time for it to set up.
One thing that REALLY bothered me on Saturday was the lack of any truly effective downfield blocking (ex, Tolliver). The Vandy secondary had no problem quickly shedding their blocks and shutting the out-route plays Jefferson was passing out of down. I remember one particular play where LaFell had two men to beat and the first one crushed Tolliver and dragged LaFell down by the foot. Only thing that can fix it is practice, but it's still very important if we're going to keep running this offense.
